Wrong-Way Driver Killed in Head-On Crash on I-295 Near Baymeadows Road in Jacksonville

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A wrong-way crash on Interstate 295 in Jacksonville claimed the life of one driver and seriously injured another passenger early Saturday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred on the southbound lanes of I-295 just north of Baymeadows Road after a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction collided head-on with another sedan. The crash prompted an extensive emergency response as troopers investigated one of the most dangerous types of roadway collisions.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 3:38 a.m. on June 27, 2026, on Interstate 295 just north of Baymeadows Road in Jacksonville.

Investigators reported that:

  • A 31-year-old Jacksonville man was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of I-295.
  • A Jacksonville woman was traveling southbound in the inside travel lane.
  • The two vehicles collided head-on in the inside general-purpose lane.
  • The wrong-way driver’s vehicle came to rest on the southbound emergency shoulder.
  • The other vehicle came to rest in the express lanes.

The 31-year-old wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman driving the second vehicle suffered minor injuries, while her male passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported for medical treatment.

Authorities have not released the identities of those involved.

Investigation Underway

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating what caused the Jacksonville man to enter the interstate and travel in the wrong direction.

Investigators will likely examine:

  • The point where the vehicle entered the highway.
  • Driver impairment.
  • Driver fatigue.
  • Medical emergencies.
  • Roadway signage.
  • Vehicle event data.
  • Surveillance or traffic camera footage.

At this time, authorities have not announced whether alcohol, drugs, or another factor contributed to the crash.

Wrong-Way Crashes Are Often Catastrophic

Wrong-way crashes are among the deadliest types of motor vehicle collisions because they frequently occur at highway speeds, creating extremely high-impact forces.

These crashes often result in:

  • Fatal injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Internal organ damage
  • Multiple fractures

Many wrong-way collisions occur during overnight or early morning hours, when visibility is reduced and impaired or fatigued driving is statistically more common.

Florida Traffic Laws That May Apply

Although investigators have not determined the cause of this crash, several Florida statutes may become relevant depending on the findings.

Florida Statute §316.081 requires vehicles to be driven on the proper side of the roadway except under limited circumstances authorized by law.

If investigators determine impairment contributed to the collision, Florida Statute §316.193, governing driving under the influence, could also become relevant.

Authorities have not indicated that either statute has been violated in this case.

When serious injuries result from another driver’s negligence, Florida law may provide injured victims with the right to pursue compensation.

Depending on the circumstances, recoverable damages may include:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Future medical treatment
  • Lost wages
  • Reduced earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Property damage

If a fatal collision is caused by another driver’s negligence, surviving family members may also have rights under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).

Because the wrong-way driver died in this crash, any potential civil claims would depend on the facts of the investigation and may involve the driver’s estate or available insurance coverage.

How Wrong-Way Crash Investigations Are Conducted

Fatal interstate crashes require extensive accident reconstruction.

Investigators often analyze:

  • Tire marks and roadway evidence
  • Vehicle damage patterns
  • Electronic crash data recorders
  • Toxicology results
  • Witness statements
  • Highway surveillance footage

These findings help determine how the wrong-way entry occurred and whether any additional contributing factors were involved.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal collision on Interstate 295.

Additional information—including the identities of those involved and the cause of the wrong-way entry—is expected to be released as investigators complete their review.

A Tragic Reminder for Florida Drivers

Wrong-way crashes can change lives in an instant, often leaving families and survivors facing devastating physical and emotional consequences.

Our thoughts are with the family of the man who lost his life, as well as the injured victims and their loved ones during this difficult time.

The Florida Highway Patrol’s investigation remains ongoing.
