Woman on Motorized Scooter Killed After Tesla Traveling at High Speed Crashes at SR-16 and US-1 in St. Augustine
A 64-year-old woman riding a motorized scooter was killed Wednesday evening after a Tesla traveling at what investigators described as a high rate of speed struck her from behind at the intersection of State Road 16 and U.S. 1 in St. Augustine.
The violent crash caused the Tesla to continue through the intersection, strike a traffic camera pole, overturn across multiple lanes of traffic, and come to rest upside down in a nearby hotel parking lot. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal collision.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. on July 8, 2026, at the intersection of State Road 16 and North Ponce de Leon Boulevard (U.S. 1) in St. Augustine.
Investigators reported that:
- A Tesla was traveling eastbound on State Road 16 in the right lane.
- Troopers believe the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed.
- A 64-year-old woman was operating a motorized scooter in the same direction of travel.
- The Tesla struck the rear of the scooter.
- After the collision, the Tesla continued forward, struck a traffic camera pole, crossed all lanes of U.S. 1, overturned, and came to rest upside down in the parking lot of the Flagler Inn.
- The Tesla caught fire after the collision.
The scooter rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Tesla suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Major Intersection Closed During Investigation
Following the crash, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office closed the intersections of:
- State Road 16 and U.S. 1.
- State Road 16 and Lewis Speedway.
The closures remained in effect while investigators documented the crash scene and emergency crews cleared the roadway.
Authorities urged motorists to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
No Law Enforcement Pursuit Occurred
Video captured by a passing motorist showed the Tesla flipping across multiple lanes of traffic following the collision.
Although a law enforcement vehicle arrived moments after the crash, the Florida Highway Patrol confirmed there was no vehicle pursuit prior to the collision.
Speed May Become a Key Focus of the Investigation
The Florida Highway Patrol indicated the Tesla was traveling at a high rate of speed before striking the scooter.
Investigators will likely examine:
- Vehicle speed.
- Event data recorder information from the Tesla.
- Driver distraction.
- Roadway conditions.
- Visibility.
- Witness statements.
- Surveillance and traffic camera footage.
- Physical evidence from the crash scene.
Authorities have not announced whether impairment or other contributing factors are suspected.
Florida Traffic Laws That May Apply
Because the investigation remains ongoing, no determination of fault has been finalized.
Depending on the evidence, investigators may evaluate several Florida statutes, including:
- Florida Statute §316.183, requiring motorists to operate at a speed that is reasonable and prudent under existing conditions.
- Florida Statute §316.1925, governing careless driving.
- Florida Statute §316.192, addressing reckless driving if the evidence supports a willful or wanton disregard for the safety of others.
- Florida Statute §316.0895, requiring drivers to maintain a safe following distance.
Should investigators determine that excessive speed or other criminal conduct contributed to the fatal crash, additional criminal charges could be considered.
Potential Legal Rights Following a Fatal Crash
If the investigation determines that another driver’s negligence caused or contributed to the collision, the victim’s surviving family members may have legal rights under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).
Depending on the circumstances, eligible family members may be entitled to pursue compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses.
- Medical expenses incurred before death.
- Loss of financial support and services.
- Loss of companionship and protection.
- Mental pain and suffering for qualifying survivors.
A thorough investigation is often critical to preserving evidence and determining liability in fatal traffic collisions.
Motorized Scooter Riders Face Significant Risks
Motorized scooter operators are among the most vulnerable roadway users because they have little physical protection during a collision.
Drivers should remain alert for scooters, bicycles, motorcycles, and pedestrians, particularly at busy intersections and in areas with mixed traffic. Maintaining safe speeds and appropriate following distances can help prevent devastating rear-end collisions.
Investigation Continues
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash at State Road 16 and U.S. 1.
Additional information, including the identity of the victim and the factors that led to the collision, may be released as investigators complete their review.
