Woman Killed, Two Children Seriously Injured in Crash on US-301 in Duval County
A 59-year-old woman was killed and two young children were seriously injured following a devastating crash Thursday morning on U.S. Highway 301 in Duval County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The fatal collision occurred in the 2400 block of US-301 near Summerfield Lane and remains under active investigation.
According to FHP, the Baldwin woman had just pulled out of a driveway and attempted to cross the northbound lanes of U.S. 301 to reach the grassy median.
At the same time, a gray Ford pickup truck driven by a 28-year-old Callahan woman was traveling northbound in the left lane. Troopers say the Honda driven by the Baldwin woman crossed directly into the pickup’s path, leaving the truck driver unable to avoid the collision.
The pickup truck struck the left side of the Honda in a violent impact.
Fatalities and Serious Injuries Reported
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, but the 59-year-old Honda driver was pronounced dead.
Three others suffered serious injuries:
- A 28-year-old Callahan woman driving the pickup truck
- A 4-year-old boy
- A 7-year-old girl
The two children, both passengers in the Honda and also from Callahan, were transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Their current conditions have not been publicly updated.
Authorities have not released the identities of those involved.
Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash to determine all contributing factors. At this time, no additional details have been released regarding speed, impairment, or other possible causes.
The Dangers of Crossing High-Speed Highways
Crashes that occur when vehicles attempt to cross or turn across high-speed highways are often severe due to the limited reaction time for oncoming drivers and the force of side-impact collisions.
These types of crashes can be especially dangerous for passengers — particularly children — who are more vulnerable to serious injuries.
The investigation into this tragic Duval County crash remains ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information that may assist troopers is encouraged to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
