Woman Killed in Wrong-Way Crash in Volusia County, Florida Highway Patrol Says
A 27-year-old woman was killed early Wednesday morning after a wrong-way driver crashed into her vehicle in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision occurred early March 11, 2026, near the intersection of Kepler Avenue and Mimosa Lane, investigators said.
Authorities report that a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction caused a devastating head-on crash.
According to troopers, a Ford Edge was traveling northbound in the southbound lane of Kepler Avenue when it collided with a Honda Civic traveling southbound.
The vehicles struck each other head-on, causing severe damage.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash, but the 27-year-old woman driving the Honda Civic was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials have not yet released her name pending notification of family members.
Investigators said the driver of the Ford Edge, a 33-year-old man, survived the crash.
He was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center with minor injuries, according to authorities.
Troopers have not yet determined why the vehicle was traveling in the wrong lane.
The crash remains under investigation.
Wrong-way crashes are among the most deadly types of traffic collisions because they often involve high-speed, head-on impacts.
These crashes frequently occur during late-night or early-morning hours and may be linked to:
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Driver confusion or disorientation
- Fatigue
- Poor roadway lighting or signage
- Drivers entering roads from the wrong direction
Head-on crashes leave drivers with little time to react, which significantly increases the risk of fatal injuries.
Legal Options After Fatal Wrong-Way Crashes
When a driver’s negligence causes a fatal accident, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law.
These claims can help families recover damages such as:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical costs related to the crash
- Loss of financial support
- Emotional suffering and loss of companionship
In many wrong-way collisions, investigators also review whether impairment, reckless driving, or other negligent actions played a role in the crash.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the deadly wrong-way crash that occurred on Kepler Avenue near Mimosa Lane in Volusia County.
Authorities have not yet announced whether any charges will be filed.
