Woman Killed in Oakland Park Hit-and-Run Identified as 67-Year-Old Donna Ramsey
Authorities have identified the victim of a tragic hit-and-run crash in Oakland Park, Florida as 67-year-old Donna Ramsey, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
The fatal incident occurred earlier this month and has since led to the arrest of a suspect.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened on April 8, 2026, near the 4400 block of Northwest 9th Avenue. Investigators say Ramsey was crossing the roadway when she was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound.
When deputies and fire rescue crews arrived, Ramsey was found at the scene and pronounced dead.
Authorities later identified a suspect, 22-year-old Khaleel Carrey, who was allegedly driving the vehicle involved in the crash. Investigators say Carrey fled the scene after the collision. Law enforcement was able to locate his vehicle, and he was taken into custody.
Carrey is now facing charges including failure to stop and remain at the scene of a crash involving death and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. The case remains under investigation.
The Dangers of Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crashes
Hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians are among the most devastating types of roadway incidents, often leaving victims without immediate assistance.
Key risks in these cases include:
- Severe or fatal injuries due to direct impact
- Delayed emergency response when drivers flee
- Lack of immediate medical aid
- Challenges in identifying the responsible driver
Leaving the scene of a crash is not only illegal but can significantly worsen outcomes for victims.
Legal Consequences of Leaving the Scene in Florida
Under Florida law, drivers involved in a crash that results in injury or death are required to stop, render aid, and contact authorities.
Failure to do so can result in serious criminal charges, including:
- Felony charges for leaving the scene of a crash involving death
- Additional charges for tampering with evidence
- Potential imprisonment and fines
In addition to criminal penalties, drivers may also face civil liability.
Wrongful Death Claims in Hit-and-Run Cases
Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, surviving family members may pursue compensation when a loved one is killed due to another party’s negligence or wrongdoing.
Damages may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical expenses related to the incident
- Loss of companionship and support
- Mental pain and suffering
Even in hit-and-run cases, compensation may still be available through insurance coverage or other legal avenues.
Investigation Ongoing
The Broward Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and the events that followed.
