Woman Dies After Pickup Collides With Sedan and Tree on Pritchard Road in Jacksonville
A woman in her 40s has died following a late-afternoon crash on Jacksonville’s westside, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The fatal collision occurred just before 5 p.m. Monday on Pritchard Road.
Authorities say the woman was driving a pickup truck eastbound on Pritchard Road when, for reasons that remain under investigation, her vehicle began to veer to the right.
Investigators report that she then overcorrected, causing the pickup to crash into a sedan carrying two passengers.
The force of the collision sent the pickup truck into the median, where it struck a large tree.
The woman was transported to a local hospital but later died from her injuries.
The two occupants of the sedan were not injured.
The crash remains under investigation.
Overcorrection accidents often occur when a driver unintentionally drifts from their lane and reacts sharply in an attempt to regain control. This can result in:
- Loss of steering control
- Secondary collisions with other vehicles
- Vehicles crossing into medians or opposing lanes
- High-impact crashes with fixed objects such as trees
Investigators will likely examine possible contributing factors, including:
- Speed
- Medical emergency
- Mechanical issues
- Roadway conditions
- Distraction
When a vehicle strikes a fixed object such as a tree, the impact can be severe due to the sudden stop and lack of energy absorption compared to another vehicle.
Legal Considerations in Multi-Vehicle Crashes
Although no one else was injured in this crash, multi-vehicle collisions often require a detailed investigation to determine liability and contributing causes.
In fatal crashes, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim if negligence, roadway conditions, or mechanical failures contributed to the incident.
Potential damages in such cases may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical costs incurred prior to death
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship
- Mental pain and suffering
Each case depends heavily on the specific facts uncovered during the investigation.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the fatal crash on Pritchard Road.
