Woman Airlifted After Boat Crashes Into Bridge in Harris Gap Channel on Sugarloaf Key

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A boating accident in the Florida Keys sent one woman to the hospital Sunday afternoon after the vessel she was traveling on crashed into a bridge in Harris Gap Channel on Sugarloaf Key, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the collision, which occurred just one day after another serious transportation incident in the same area involving a pickup truck that entered the water near U.S. 1.

What We Know About the Boat Crash

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m. on July 5, 2026, at the Harris Gap Channel Bridge on Sugarloaf Key.

Authorities reported that:

  • A recreational boat carrying two people struck the Harris Gap Channel Bridge.
  • One woman sustained injuries in the collision.
  • She was airlifted to a mainland hospital for treatment.
  • Officials described her injuries as non-life-threatening.

Photographs released by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office showed the boat with extensive front-end damage, including a center console that had been pushed backward by the force of the impact.

The condition of the second person aboard the vessel has not been reported.

FWC Leading the Investigation

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the agency responsible for investigating most recreational boating accidents in Florida, is conducting the investigation.

Investigators will likely examine several factors, including:

  • Vessel speed.
  • Operator actions before the collision.
  • Visibility and weather conditions.
  • Mechanical issues.
  • Possible operator impairment or distraction.
  • Damage to the vessel and bridge.

At this time, authorities have not announced what caused the boat to strike the bridge or whether any citations or criminal charges are expected.

Second Serious Incident in the Same Area

The boating crash occurred in the same general location where another serious accident happened the previous day.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a pickup truck drove off U.S. 1 into the water near Sugarloaf Key on Saturday morning. Three occupants escaped with minor injuries, and investigators indicated the driver may have fallen asleep before leaving the roadway.

While the two incidents are unrelated, both highlight the importance of maintaining constant attention while operating vehicles and watercraft in areas where roadways and waterways closely intersect.

Florida Boating Laws

Florida has more registered recreational boats than any other state, making safe vessel operation especially important.

Under Florida law, vessel operators have a duty to operate their boats in a careful and prudent manner while considering surrounding traffic, weather, visibility, and navigational hazards.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission may evaluate whether any provisions of Florida’s boating safety laws, including those found in Chapter 327 of the Florida Statutes, apply once its investigation is complete.

Whether any violations occurred will depend on the evidence gathered during the investigation.

Boating accidents often involve many of the same legal principles as motor vehicle collisions.

If an accident is caused by another person’s negligence, injured passengers may have the right to seek compensation for:

  • Medical expenses.
  • Lost wages.
  • Future medical care.
  • Pain and suffering.
  • Rehabilitation costs.

Potential liability may also arise if a boating accident results from:

  • Operator negligence.
  • Excessive speed.
  • Distracted or impaired operation.
  • Mechanical defects.
  • Improper vessel maintenance.

Determining liability typically requires a thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Boating Safety in Florida

Florida’s waterways attract millions of recreational boaters each year. Operators can reduce the risk of collisions by:

  • Maintaining a proper lookout at all times.
  • Operating at safe speeds.
  • Remaining alert near bridges and narrow channels.
  • Avoiding alcohol or drug impairment.
  • Staying familiar with local navigation markers and channel conditions.

Careful operation is particularly important in areas like the Florida Keys, where bridges, shallow waters, and heavy recreational boating traffic often converge.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission continues to investigate the cause of the Harris Gap Channel boat crash.

Additional information, including what led to the collision and whether any enforcement action will be taken, may be released as the investigation progresses.

Wishing the Injured Passenger a Full Recovery

While this crash could have had far more tragic consequences, it serves as another reminder of the importance of safe boating practices on Florida’s busy waterways.

Our thoughts are with the injured passenger, and we wish her a full and speedy recovery as investigators work to determine exactly what caused the collision.
