Wauchula Man Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on State Road 62 in Manatee County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A 28-year-old man from Wauchula was killed Friday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on State Road 62, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the fatal collision occurred around 4:00 p.m. east of Bunker Hill in Manatee County.

Investigators reported the Wauchula man was driving westbound on SR-62 when his vehicle crossed the center line and entered the eastbound lane, where it collided with a Freightliner semi-tractor trailer driven by a 66-year-old man from Kissimmee.

Authorities say debris from the collision then struck two additional westbound vehicles, including an SUV carrying a woman and two teenagers from Lakeland and a pickup truck carrying three people from Nokomis and Sarasota.

The 28-year-old sedan driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi-truck driver reportedly suffered minor injuries, while no injuries were reported among the occupants of the SUV or pickup truck.

The crash remains under investigation.

Head-On Collisions With Semi-Trucks Often Cause Catastrophic Injuries

Crashes involving passenger vehicles and commercial tractor-trailers frequently result in severe or fatal injuries due to the significant size and weight differences between the vehicles.

Victims involved in head-on truck collisions may suffer:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Internal bleeding
  • Crush injuries
  • Spinal cord trauma
  • Fatal blunt force injuries

Secondary impacts involving debris can also place nearby motorists at risk, even when they are not directly involved in the initial collision.

Center Line Crossover Crashes Can Happen for Many Reasons

Investigators will likely continue examining what caused the sedan to leave its lane of travel.

Center line crossover crashes may involve:

  • Driver fatigue
  • Distracted driving
  • Medical emergencies
  • Impaired driving
  • Excessive speed
  • Mechanical failures

At this stage, authorities have not publicly identified a specific cause.

Investigators may review:

  • Tire marks and roadway evidence
  • Vehicle mechanical systems
  • Witness statements
  • Electronic vehicle data
  • Surveillance footage if available

Multi-Vehicle Crashes Can Create Widespread Risks

Although only one fatality was reported, the collision affected four vehicles in total.

Debris-related secondary crashes can:

  • Cause additional injuries
  • Block major roadways
  • Increase risks for uninvolved drivers
  • Complicate emergency response efforts

Fortunately, authorities reported the occupants of the SUV and pickup truck escaped without injuries.

State Road 62 Continues to See Serious Traffic Accidents

State Road 62 is a rural corridor frequently traveled by:

  • Commercial trucks
  • Agricultural vehicles
  • Local commuters
  • Long-distance motorists

Rural highways often present increased risks because of:

  • Higher travel speeds
  • Limited lighting
  • Narrow shoulders
  • Two-lane traffic patterns

Head-on collisions on rural highways are often among the deadliest types of crashes investigated by Florida authorities.

Potential Wrongful Death Claims Under Florida Law

The death of the Wauchula driver may potentially give rise to a wrongful death claim under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Fla. Stat. § 768.16–768.26, depending on the results of the investigation.

Potential wrongful death damages may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical expenses incurred before death
  • Loss of financial support
  • Mental pain and suffering
  • Loss of companionship

Wrongful death claims are generally brought by the personal representative of the deceased person’s estate on behalf of surviving family members.

The Importance of Thorough Commercial Vehicle Crash Investigations

Crashes involving semi-trucks often require extensive accident reconstruction and forensic analysis.

Investigators may examine:

  • Truck electronic logging data
  • Vehicle speeds
  • Driver logs and maintenance records
  • Crash scene measurements
  • Debris patterns
  • Toxicology testing if applicable

Prompt investigation is often important because physical evidence and electronic records may quickly deteriorate or disappear.
