Violent Wynwood Home Invasion Leaves Three Injured: Legal Options For Victims

In the early hours of the morning, a high-rise apartment in the heart of Wynwood became the scene of a terrifying home invasion robbery that left two men with gunshot wounds and a third with a head injury. The incident occurred just before 12:30 a.m. at 2150 N. Miami Avenue, shaking residents and raising serious concerns about safety and building security.
According to the Miami Police Department, three armed men forced their way into an apartment unit in the building and demanded money and jewelry from two occupants. A struggle ensued when the victims attempted to disarm the intruders. During the altercation, one man was shot, another was pistol-whipped, and a neighboring resident was also shot in the leg.
All three victims were transported to Ryder Trauma Center and are reported to be in stable condition.
Although a person of interest was detained near the scene, police confirmed he was not one of the three suspected assailants. Witnesses and residents shared that the suspects fled the apartment and attempted to escape through the building’s lobby, only to realize they needed to press a button to exit. The suspects reportedly rummaged through ground-floor offices before slipping out through a side door.
Residents of the building are now speaking up, voicing concerns about safety protocols and the types of individuals frequenting the property. One neighbor noted that the area is generally quiet, but the building itself has become increasingly unpredictable.
Salvatore Mazzola, a resident of the building, described the environment as “sketchy,” citing incidents of people wearing ankle monitors using the pool and an overall decline in safety. “It makes me feel like I should be getting out this building faster than I wanted to,” Mazzola said.
Can an Apartment Complex Be Held Liable for a Violent Crime?
In Florida, property owners, including apartment complexes and high-rise condominiums, have a legal duty to provide reasonable security for their tenants and guests. When violent crimes like robberies, shootings, or assaults occur due to negligent security, the property owner or management company may be held liable.
Legal claims in these situations often hinge on questions like:
- Were there working security cameras and personnel on-site?
- Was access to the building adequately restricted?
- Were there prior similar crimes in the area that should have prompted additional security measures?
- Did management ignore any known risks or resident complaints?
If you or a loved one was injured in a violent crime at an apartment complex or high-rise, you may be entitled to file a negligent security claim against the property owner, management company, or security firm responsible for safeguarding the premises.
A successful claim can help recover damages for:
- Medical bills and ongoing treatment
- Pain and suffering
- Lost wages
- Emotional trauma
- Loss of enjoyment of life
