Violent Robbery Outside Plantation Publix Leaves Victims Injured, Raises Security Concerns

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A violent incident outside a Publix supermarket in Plantation, Florida has left at least one person hospitalized after a robbery involving a firearm and physical assault, according to the Plantation Police Department.

The attack, which occurred in a busy retail parking lot, is raising serious questions about safety and potential negligent security concerns.

What We Know About the Incident

According to the Plantation Police Department, officers responded shortly after 8:15 p.m. to the Publix located at 6921 West Broward Boulevard following reports of a fight involving a firearm.

Investigators determined that during the altercation:

  • One suspect pulled out a handgun and pistol-whipped a victim in the back of the head
  • The suspect then stole the victim’s cellphone
  • A second victim was bitten, punched, and scratched during the attack

One of the victims was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Suspects Arrested Shortly After

Witnesses were able to provide information about the suspects’ vehicle, allowing officers to quickly locate and stop the car.

Police arrested two individuals:

  • Khamal J. Powell, 28, charged with robbery with a firearm and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon
  • Khalil S. Powell, 29, charged with battery

Authorities also noted that one of the suspects had an outstanding warrant from Brevard County.

Both suspects were booked into the Broward County Jail.

Violent Crimes in Commercial Parking Lots

Retail parking lots—especially those at grocery stores, shopping centers, and plazas—are common locations for violent crimes, including robberies and assaults.

These areas can become targets due to:

  • High foot traffic and visibility
  • Individuals carrying valuables (phones, wallets, purchases)
  • Limited security presence during evening hours
  • Poor lighting or surveillance coverage

Incidents like this highlight how quickly routine errands can turn dangerous.

Potential Negligent Security Concerns

In situations involving violent crime on commercial property, questions often arise about whether adequate security measures were in place.

Potential negligent security issues may include:

  • Lack of visible security personnel
  • Insufficient lighting in parking areas
  • Absence of surveillance cameras or monitoring
  • Failure to address prior criminal activity in the area

Property owners and businesses may have a duty to take reasonable steps to protect customers from foreseeable criminal acts.

Victims of assaults and robberies may have multiple avenues for legal recovery.

In addition to criminal charges against suspects, victims may pursue civil claims if:

  • The property lacked adequate security measures
  • The business failed to address known safety risks
  • The incident was foreseeable based on prior similar crimes

These claims fall under premises liability and negligent security law in Florida.

Compensation for Victims

Victims of violent attacks may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Lost income
  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional trauma

In cases involving weapons or serious assaults, damages can be significant.

Investigation Ongoing

The Plantation Police Department continues to investigate the incident.
