Van Crashes Into Orange County Home Near UCF, Driver Flees Scene

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A frightening early-morning crash in Orange County, Florida left a home severely damaged after a van slammed into a residential building near the University of Central Florida, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver fled the scene, leaving residents shaken and temporarily displaced.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 4:00 a.m. on May 4, 2026, on Alafaya Woods Court.

Troopers say a Sprinter van first collided with an SUV before veering off the roadway and crashing directly into a triplex, becoming lodged in the structure.

The impact caused significant structural damage to the home.

Residents Describe Terrifying Moments

One resident, who was sleeping just feet away from where the van struck, described waking up to chaos.

He reported:

  • Being covered in dust and debris after the wall collapsed
  • Crawling out of the home to escape
  • Returning inside to rescue his cat from the rubble

The resident said he briefly encountered the driver after the crash, who appeared distressed and apologized before fleeing prior to law enforcement’s arrival.

Injuries and Displacement

While no life-threatening injuries were reported, the crash could have easily been fatal.

Residents suffered:

  • Minor injuries, including head pain
  • Displacement from their home due to structural damage

Authorities have deemed the impacted portion of the building unsafe.

The American Red Cross is assisting those displaced with temporary housing and support.

Driver Flees, Investigation Ongoing

Troopers say the driver fled the scene and has not yet been identified.

Investigators are working to locate the individual and determine:

  • Who was operating the vehicle
  • Whether impairment or other factors were involved
  • The ownership and use of the van, which reportedly displayed a party rental business name

State records indicate the business is registered nearby, but no one has yet responded to inquiries.

The Dangers of Vehicles Leaving the Roadway

Crashes involving vehicles striking homes are rare but extremely dangerous.

They often occur due to:

  • Speeding or loss of control
  • Impaired or reckless driving
  • Distracted driving
  • Medical emergencies

When vehicles leave the roadway, the consequences can be catastrophic for both occupants and residents.

When a driver crashes into a home and flees, multiple legal issues may arise.

These can include:

  • Criminal charges for leaving the scene of a crash
  • Liability for property damage
  • Claims for personal injuries suffered by residents
  • Potential claims involving business-owned vehicles

Property owners and residents may be entitled to compensation for damages and losses.

Investigation Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and is actively searching for the driver.
