Two Women Killed After Tesla Collides with Flatbed Truck on South Dixie Highway in Miami-Dade County
Two women lost their lives early Thursday morning after a Tesla sedan crashed into the rear of a slow-moving flatbed commercial truck in southwest Miami-Dade County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision occurred in the northbound lanes of South Dixie Highway during the early morning hours and prompted a lengthy road closure while investigators processed the scene. Authorities are continuing to investigate what caused the Tesla to strike the truck.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on June 25, 2026, in the northbound lanes of South Dixie Highway (U.S. 1) near Southwest 127th Avenue.
Investigators say a gray Tesla sedan collided with the rear of a flatbed commercial truck that was traveling at approximately 20 mph as part of a caravan of work trucks.
Troopers reported that the trucks had recently completed work in the area and were traveling together when the collision occurred.
Both occupants of the Tesla, identified only as women believed to be in their late 20s or early 30s, suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet publicly released their identities pending notification of family members.
Roadway Closed During Investigation
Following the collision, U.S. 1 was closed between Southwest 232nd Street and Southwest 240th Street while emergency personnel responded and crash reconstruction investigators documented the scene.
The victims were removed from the heavily damaged Tesla several hours after the collision as investigators continued gathering evidence.
The roadway later reopened after crews completed their investigation and removed the damaged vehicles.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
At this time, the Florida Highway Patrol has not determined why the Tesla struck the rear of the flatbed truck.
Investigators will likely examine several potential factors, including:
- Vehicle speed
- Driver distraction
- Fatigue
- Visibility and lighting conditions
- Roadway conditions
- Mechanical issues
- Vehicle event data recorders
- Cell phone records, if appropriate
- Surveillance or traffic camera footage
No citations or criminal charges have been announced, and investigators have not indicated whether impairment is believed to have played a role.
Rear-End Collisions with Commercial Vehicles Can Be Catastrophic
Crashes involving commercial trucks frequently result in severe or fatal injuries because of the significant difference in size, weight, and ride height between passenger vehicles and heavy trucks.
When passenger vehicles collide with the rear of commercial trucks, occupants may suffer devastating injuries, including:
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Internal organ damage
- Multiple fractures
- Fatal blunt-force trauma
These crashes often require detailed crash reconstruction to determine precisely how and why the collision occurred.
Florida Laws That May Apply
Although investigators have not identified a cause, several Florida traffic laws may be considered during the investigation.
Florida Statute §316.0895 requires motorists to maintain a reasonable and prudent following distance based on traffic conditions and vehicle speed.
Additionally, Florida Statute §316.1925 defines careless driving as operating a vehicle without careful and prudent regard for roadway conditions, traffic, and surrounding circumstances.
Whether either statute applies in this case will depend entirely on the evidence collected by investigators.
Potential Wrongful Death Considerations
Whenever a fatal motor vehicle collision occurs, investigators and legal professionals may examine whether negligence by another party contributed to the crash.
Potential issues that may be evaluated include:
- Commercial vehicle operation
- Visibility of the work convoy
- Lighting and warning devices
- Vehicle maintenance
- Driver actions
- Roadway conditions
- Traffic control measures
If evidence ultimately establishes that another party’s negligence contributed to the collision, surviving family members may have rights under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).
Potential damages may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical expenses incurred before death
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and protection
- Mental pain and suffering experienced by surviving family members
A wrongful death claim is a separate civil matter and does not require criminal charges to be filed.
Commercial Vehicle Safety Investigations
When commercial vehicles are involved in fatal crashes, investigators often review additional evidence beyond the collision itself, including:
- Driver qualification records
- Hours-of-service compliance
- Vehicle inspection records
- Maintenance logs
- Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
- Lighting and reflective equipment
- Company safety policies
These factors may help determine whether all applicable safety requirements were followed.
Investigation Continues
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal collision.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to determine:
- What caused the Tesla to strike the flatbed truck
- Whether speed or distraction contributed to the collision
- Whether any roadway or vehicle factors played a role
- Whether any citations or criminal charges are warranted
Additional information may be released as investigators complete their reconstruction of the crash.
