Two Teens Injured in Cocoa E-Bike Hit-and-Run as Police Search for Suspect SUV
A hit-and-run crash in Cocoa, Florida left two teenagers injured Tuesday afternoon, and police are actively searching for the driver responsible.
According to the Cocoa Police Department, officers responded shortly after 4:30 p.m. to a crash at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and University Lane. Investigators say a driver in a silver or gray Honda SUV failed to obey a stop sign and struck two teenagers riding E-bikes.
The victims — a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old — sustained minor injuries and were treated following the crash. Fortunately, their injuries were not life-threatening.
Police say the driver left the scene without stopping, a serious criminal offense under Florida law, especially when injuries are involved.
The suspect vehicle is believed to be either a Honda Pilot or Honda CR-V, and investigators expect it to have damage to the front passenger side, particularly the front fender.
The driver has been described as a Black male with a thick beard.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the crash or the suspect vehicle to come forward. Tips can be submitted to the Cocoa Police Department, referencing Case No. 2026-3237, or anonymously via email or text at dropadime@cocoapolice.com.
Even small details — such as seeing a damaged Honda in the area — could help identify the driver.
E-Bike Accidents and Legal Concerns
E-bikes are increasingly common on Florida roadways, but riders are especially vulnerable in collisions with motor vehicles. In hit-and-run cases involving bicycles or E-bikes, victims may face challenges obtaining compensation, particularly if the driver is not immediately identified.
Potential avenues for recovery may include:
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP) benefits
- Claims against the at-fault driver once identified
- Additional liability if roadway design or signage contributed to the crash
Leaving the scene of a crash involving injuries can result in felony charges, license revocation, and significant civil liability for the driver.
