Two Men Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on Card Sound Road in Miami-Dade County
A devastating early morning crash in Miami-Dade County left two men dead and several others injured Thursday after a multi-vehicle collision shut down Card Sound Road for hours, according to authorities.
The crash prompted a major emergency response and temporarily cut off one of the primary routes connecting Miami-Dade to the Florida Keys.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the crash at approximately 5:15 a.m. on February 19, 2026, along Card Sound Road about eight miles south of U.S. 1.
Authorities reported:
- The crash involved three vehicles
- Two adult men were pronounced dead at the scene
- One man was transported to a hospital in critical condition
- A total of six patients were evaluated by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue
- At least one patient was designated a trauma alert
Due to the severity of the collision, Card Sound Road was shut down in both directions from U.S. 1 to the Monroe County line, forcing drivers to seek alternate routes and causing significant disruptions to travel in and out of the Florida Keys.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes Often Result in Severe or Fatal Injuries
High-speed roadways like Card Sound Road can become particularly dangerous when multiple vehicles are involved. Chain-reaction collisions often lead to catastrophic injuries due to:
- Limited reaction time between vehicles
- High travel speeds
- Reduced visibility during early morning hours
- Driver fatigue or distraction
- Unsafe passing or lane changes
When several vehicles are involved, determining exactly how a crash occurred and who is responsible can be complex.
Determining Liability After a Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash
Following a serious crash involving multiple vehicles, investigators will examine:
- Vehicle positions and crash reconstruction evidence
- Driver speed and braking patterns
- Potential impairment or distraction
- Roadway conditions and lighting
- Surveillance or dashcam footage
- Witness statements
In fatal collisions, law enforcement focuses on documenting the incident and determining whether any criminal violations occurred. However, civil liability for wrongful death or injury must be investigated separately.
Wrongful Death and Injury Claims After Fatal Crashes
When negligence contributes to a fatal crash, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law.
Potential compensation may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical expenses prior to death
- Loss of financial support and services
- Loss of companionship and guidance
- Pain and suffering for surviving family members
Individuals injured in the crash may also be entitled to compensation for:
- Emergency medical treatment
- Ongoing rehabilitation
- Lost income and reduced earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
Florida follows a modified comparative negligence system (§768.81), meaning liability may be shared among multiple drivers depending on the facts of the case.
