Two Men Identified in Deadly US 17-92 Crash in Casselberry; Charges Pending Against Suspected Drug Trafficker
Authorities have identified the two men killed in Tuesday’s devastating high-speed crash on U.S. Highway 17-92 in Casselberry as Christopher Marier, 42, and Tyler M. Marier, 40.
Investigators say the fatal collision occurred after a suspected drug trafficker fled an attempted traffic stop in Sanford, reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph before crashing into the victims’ vehicle. Criminal charges are expected as multiple law enforcement agencies continue their investigations.
Victims Identified
On July 8, 2026, the Casselberry Police Department identified the victims of the crash as:
- Christopher Marier, 42
- Tyler M. Marier, 40
Both men were killed when their vehicle was struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by 26-year-old Marquavious Tayvon Wheaton.
Their deaths have left another Florida family mourning the tragic consequences of alleged reckless and criminal driving.
What Happened
According to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted to stop Wheaton shortly before noon on July 7 as part of a drug trafficking investigation in Sanford.
Authorities reported that:
- Wheaton refused to stop for deputies.
- Ground units did not pursue the vehicle because of public safety concerns.
- The Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit monitored the vehicle from the air.
- Wheaton allegedly drove at speeds exceeding 100 mph.
Minutes later, investigators say Wheaton entered Casselberry and crashed into the Marier vehicle on U.S. 17-92 near Sunnytown Road.
The force of the collision caused one of the vehicles to catch fire, with debris scattered across the intersection.
Both Christopher and Tyler Marier died as a result of the collision.
Wheaton was taken into custody at the crash scene and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Criminal Charges Are Pending
Although Wheaton has not yet been formally arrested due to his hospitalization, authorities confirmed he remains in the custody of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials stated that criminal charges are pending, including:
- Fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement under Florida Statute §316.1935.
- Violations related to excessive speed under Florida’s “Super Speeder” law.
- Additional criminal charges expected following the fatal crash.
Because two people lost their lives, prosecutors will also evaluate whether additional felony charges, including vehicular homicide or other homicide-related offenses, are appropriate once the investigation is complete.
All criminal allegations remain subject to judicial proceedings, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Two Separate Investigations Continue
The investigation is being handled jointly by two law enforcement agencies.
The Casselberry Police Department is conducting the traffic homicide investigation because the collision occurred within its jurisdiction.
The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the events leading up to the crash, including the attempted traffic stop and the suspected drug trafficking investigation.
Investigators continue reviewing:
- Aviation surveillance footage.
- Crash reconstruction evidence.
- Vehicle data.
- Witness statements.
- Physical evidence collected at the scene.
Potential Legal Rights for the Victims’ Families
In addition to any criminal prosecution, the families of Christopher and Tyler Marier may have legal rights under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).
If investigators determine the crash resulted from reckless or criminal conduct, eligible surviving family members may be entitled to seek compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses.
- Medical expenses incurred before death.
- Loss of financial support.
- Loss of companionship and protection.
- Mental pain and suffering for qualifying survivors.
Civil wrongful death claims are separate from criminal proceedings and may proceed regardless of whether a criminal conviction is ultimately obtained.
High-Speed Flight Places Innocent Lives at Risk
This tragedy underscores the devastating danger posed when drivers attempt to flee law enforcement at extreme speeds.
Even when officers discontinue ground pursuits in the interest of public safety, suspects who continue driving recklessly can create catastrophic consequences for innocent motorists sharing the roadway.
Florida law imposes severe criminal penalties for fleeing law enforcement because of the significant danger these incidents present to the public.
Investigation Continues
Both the Casselberry Police Department and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office continue their investigations.
Additional criminal charges are expected to be announced after investigators complete their review and prosecutors evaluate the evidence.
