Two Killed in Wrong-Way Crash on Interstate 10 in Madison County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

Two people lost their lives in a devastating wrong-way crash on Interstate 10 in Madison County during the early morning hours of June 7, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Investigators say a vehicle traveled approximately 10 miles in the wrong direction before colliding head-on with another car near the Greenville area, resulting in the deaths of both drivers.

What We Know About the Crash

According to Florida Highway Patrol investigators:

  • A 34-year-old woman from Orange Park entered Interstate 10 traveling the wrong direction.
  • She continued eastbound in westbound lanes for approximately 10 miles.
  • The vehicle collided head-on with a car driven by a 24-year-old Jacksonville man.
  • The collision occurred shortly after 1 a.m.

Both vehicles spun following the impact and came to rest on the roadway.

Both Drivers Died at the Scene

Emergency responders arrived quickly, but both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later identified the Jacksonville victim as George Cooper Jr., a graduate of Florida State University with a degree in computer science.

The circumstances that caused the wrong-way entry remain under investigation.

Wrong-Way Crashes Often Have Catastrophic Outcomes

Wrong-way collisions are among the most severe crashes that occur on highways.

Because both vehicles are typically traveling at highway speeds in opposite directions, the combined force of impact can be devastating.

Common contributing factors may include:

  • Driver impairment
  • Driver confusion
  • Poor visibility
  • Medical emergencies
  • Navigation errors

Investigators have not announced what caused this particular wrong-way event.

Family Calls for Additional Safety Measures

Following the tragedy, family members of George Cooper Jr. called for additional wrong-way detection and warning systems on interstate ramps.

Many transportation agencies across the country have implemented:

  • Flashing warning signs
  • Wrong-way detection systems
  • Enhanced ramp markings
  • Alert technology for law enforcement

These systems are designed to help prevent similar tragedies before they occur.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Additional information may become available as investigators complete their review.
