Two Killed in Motorcycle and SUV Crash at Bonita Springs Intersection
A tragic crash in Bonita Springs, Florida resulted in two fatalities after a motorcycle collided with an SUV at a busy intersection, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash highlights the deadly risks associated with intersection collisions, particularly those involving motorcycles.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on April 19, 2026, at the intersection of Imperial Parkway and East Terry Street.
Investigators say an 18-year-old man from Fort Myers was riding a motorcycle northbound on Imperial Parkway at a high rate of speed, traveling in the inside lane as he approached the intersection.
At the same time, a 65-year-old Bonita Springs man was driving an SUV southbound in the left-turn lane, also approaching the intersection. Both vehicles reportedly had a solid green traffic signal.
Troopers say the SUV driver attempted to make a left turn and entered directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycle. The front of the motorcycle collided with the front-right side of the SUV.
The impact was severe, and the motorcyclist became lodged in the passenger side of the SUV.
The motorcyclist and a 55-year-old woman from Bonita Springs who was a passenger in the SUV were both pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Gulf Coast Medical Center.
The crash remains under investigation.
The Dangers of Left-Turn Collisions Involving Motorcycles
Left-turn crashes are among the most common and dangerous types of motorcycle accidents.
Key risk factors include:
- Drivers misjudging the speed or distance of an oncoming motorcycle
- Limited visibility of smaller vehicles
- High speeds reducing reaction time
- Failure to yield the right of way
Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable due to the lack of physical protection, making these crashes frequently fatal.
Legal Considerations in Intersection Crashes
Crashes at intersections often involve complex determinations of right-of-way and fault.
Factors that may be examined include:
- Whether the turning driver properly yielded to oncoming traffic
- Speed and operation of the motorcycle
- Traffic signal timing and visibility
- Eyewitness accounts and crash reconstruction
Liability may be shared depending on how the events unfolded.
Wrongful Death Claims Under Florida Law
Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, surviving family members of those killed may be entitled to pursue compensation if negligence contributed to the crash.
Damages may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and protection
- Mental pain and suffering
Cases involving multiple fatalities often require detailed investigation and expert analysis.
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash to determine all contributing factors.
