Two Killed in Fiery Volusia County Crash After Car Overturns and Strikes Construction Equipment
A devastating single-vehicle crash in Volusia County claimed the lives of two people Thursday night after a car left the roadway, overturned, and burst into flames, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The deadly crash occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Tomoka Farms Road, just south of Bellevue Avenue.
Florida Highway Patrol investigators say a 2005 Acura RL was traveling northbound when, for reasons that remain unknown, the driver veered off the roadway.
After leaving the road, the vehicle:
- Struck an embankment
- Overturned
- Collided with nearby construction equipment
- Became engulfed in flames
The force of the crash ejected the passenger from the vehicle before the car caught fire.
Two Victims Pronounced Dead at Scene
Authorities confirmed that both occupants of the Acura were killed in the crash.
- The passenger, identified as a 27-year-old man from Orange City, was pronounced dead at the scene
- The driver has not yet been identified, pending notification of next of kin
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no additional injuries were reported.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate what caused the driver to lose control and leave the roadway. At this time, no additional details have been released regarding potential contributing factors such as speed, impairment, or roadway conditions.
Investigators are expected to conduct a thorough review, which may include vehicle inspections, crash reconstruction, and witness statements.
The Dangers of High-Speed and Single-Vehicle Crashes
Single-vehicle crashes can be just as deadly as multi-vehicle collisions, particularly when they involve:
- High speeds
- Roadway departures
- Rollovers
- Fixed-object collisions
- Post-impact fires
When vehicles strike embankments or construction equipment, the risk of rollover and fire increases significantly, often resulting in catastrophic or fatal injuries.
Legal Options for Families After a Fatal Crash
When a fatal crash occurs, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law if negligence or unsafe conditions contributed to the incident.
Depending on the circumstances, potential claims may involve:
- Defective vehicle components
- Dangerous roadway conditions
- Improperly marked construction zones
- Negligent third parties
A thorough investigation is often required to determine whether additional liability exists beyond the driver.
