Two Killed in Fiery Rollover Crash Near Daytona After Vehicle Strikes Construction Equipment
A devastating crash near Daytona Beach claimed the lives of two people Thursday night after a vehicle overturned, ejected a passenger, and caught fire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The crash occurred around 9:29 p.m. on February 19 at the intersection of Tomoka Farms Road and Bellevue Avenue, near the Daytona Flea & Farmers Market.
According to FHP investigators, a 2005 Acura traveling north on Tomoka Farms Road ran off the roadway for reasons that remain under investigation. Troopers said the vehicle struck an embankment, overturned, and then collided with nearby construction equipment.
During the crash, a 27-year-old passenger from Orange City was ejected from the vehicle. Authorities reported that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene.
After overturning and striking the construction equipment, the Acura caught fire. The driver became trapped inside the burning vehicle and died as a result of the crash. The driver’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Multiple Fatal Crashes Reported in Less Than 24 Hours
Thursday night’s crash marked the second fatal crash near Daytona Beach within a 24-hour period. Earlier that morning, a 54-year-old Deltona man was killed when his SUV left the roadway, overturned, and struck trees along International Speedway Boulevard east of LPGA Boulevard.
Both incidents remain under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Ongoing Safety Concerns on Volusia County Roads
According to FHP data, Volusia County had already recorded several traffic fatalities and hundreds of crashes with injuries this year prior to Thursday’s incidents. High-speed collisions, roadway departures, and rollover crashes continue to be among the most dangerous types of motor vehicle accidents, often resulting in catastrophic injuries or death.
Passengers who are not wearing seatbelts face a significantly higher risk of ejection during rollover crashes, which dramatically increases the likelihood of fatal injuries.
Legal Considerations After Fatal Car Accidents in Florida
Fatal crashes involving rollovers, roadway hazards, or construction zones may raise complex questions about liability. Depending on the circumstances, investigations may examine:
- Speed or driver impairment
- Roadway or construction zone safety conditions
- Vehicle defects or mechanical failure
- Negligence by third parties
In Florida wrongful death cases, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional suffering when negligence contributes to a fatal crash.
