The Dangers of Head-On and Cross-Centerline Crashes
Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of crashes, often resulting in catastrophic or fatal injuries.
Common contributing factors include:
- Crossing into opposing lanes of traffic
- Driver fatigue or distraction
- Impairment or medical emergencies
- Reduced visibility during overnight hours
When combined with vehicle fires, the risk of fatal injury increases significantly.
Legal Considerations in Fatal Head-On Collisions
Crashes involving lane departures require a thorough investigation to determine what caused a driver to cross into oncoming traffic.
Key factors that may be examined include:
- Driver impairment or distraction
- Roadway conditions and visibility
- Mechanical issues or sudden emergencies
- Crash reconstruction and physical evidence
Even when one vehicle crosses the centerline, a full investigation is necessary to understand all contributing factors.
Wrongful Death Claims Under Florida Law
Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue compensation if negligence contributed to the crash.
Damages may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and protection
- Mental pain and suffering
Fatal crash cases often require extensive investigation and expert analysis.
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash, including the cause of the lane departure and the identity of the sedan driver.
