Two Killed in Fatal Golf Cart Crash at U.S. 27/441 in The Villages
A tragic crash involving a golf cart claimed the lives of two people Friday night in The Villages, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The fatal collision occurred at a busy intersection and highlights the serious risks associated with golf cart travel on public roadways.
FHP reports that the crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Friday, January 9, at the intersection of County Road 109 and U.S. 27/U.S. 441.
According to investigators, a 64-year-old man from Lady Lake was driving a golf cart westbound on County Road 109 when he ran a red light at the intersection. At the same time, a 23-year-old woman from Eustis was traveling southbound on U.S. 27/441 in a Kia Soul.
The Kia struck the golf cart, causing it to overturn and come to rest at the southwest corner of the intersection.
The golf cart driver and his passenger, a 58-year-old woman from The Villages, were both transported to a local hospital. Tragically, both later died from their injuries, FHP confirmed.
The driver of the Kia and her 1-year-old child passenger were also taken to the hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
While golf carts are commonly used in communities like The Villages, they offer little to no protection in a collision with a passenger vehicle. Unlike cars, golf carts typically lack:
- Seatbelts or airbags
- Structural crash protection
- Adequate lighting for nighttime travel
When golf carts enter intersections or cross high-speed roadways such as U.S. 27/441, the risk of catastrophic or fatal injuries increases significantly.
Fatal golf cart crashes often involve issues such as:
- Failure to obey traffic signals
- Limited visibility at night
- Speed differentials between vehicles
- Inadequate roadway design for mixed vehicle traffic
Legal Rights After a Fatal Golf Cart Accident
When a fatal golf cart crash occurs, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law, depending on the circumstances.
Potential compensation may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support and services
- Loss of companionship and protection
- Mental pain and suffering
- Medical expenses incurred prior to death
Even when a traffic violation is alleged, a full investigation is critical. Factors such as roadway design, signal timing, visibility, signage, and vehicle speed may all play a role in determining liability.
