Two Killed After Suspected Drug Trafficker Traveling Over 100 MPH Crashes Into Vehicle on U.S. 17-92 in Seminole County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

Two people were killed Tuesday afternoon after authorities say a suspected drug trafficker fleeing from law enforcement at speeds exceeding 100 mph crashed into another vehicle on U.S. Highway 17-92 in Casselberry.

According to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, deputies chose not to initiate a vehicle pursuit due to public safety concerns. Instead, the agency’s aviation unit monitored the suspect from the air before the deadly collision occurred. The crash remains under investigation by the Casselberry Police Department as a traffic homicide.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop shortly before noon on July 7, 2026, in Sanford as part of a drug trafficking investigation.

Authorities reported that:

  • The driver refused to stop and fled the attempted traffic stop.
  • Deputies did not pursue the vehicle on the ground because of public safety concerns.
  • The Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit tracked the suspect from the air.
  • The suspect was observed traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph.

Minutes later, the suspect’s vehicle entered Casselberry and collided with another vehicle on U.S. Highway 17-92.

The impact killed both occupants of the other vehicle.

The suspect was detained at the crash scene and transported to a local hospital.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of either the suspect or the victims pending notification of their families.

Criminal Charges Expected

The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office announced that criminal charges are being recommended against the suspect, although the specific charges have not yet been publicly released.

Because the crash resulted in two fatalities, investigators and prosecutors will evaluate all applicable criminal statutes based on the evidence collected.

The Casselberry Police Department is leading the traffic homicide investigation.

Aviation Unit Followed Suspect Instead of Ground Pursuit

Officials emphasized that deputies intentionally chose not to engage in a high-speed vehicle pursuit because of the danger it could pose to the public.

Instead, the Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit maintained visual surveillance from the air while monitoring the suspect’s movements.

Many Florida law enforcement agencies utilize aviation resources during dangerous fleeing incidents to reduce the risks associated with high-speed pursuits while continuing to track suspects.

Florida Laws That May Apply

Although formal charges have not yet been announced, several Florida criminal statutes may apply depending on the outcome of the investigation, including:

  • Florida Statute §316.1935, prohibiting fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement.
  • Florida Statute §782.071, governing vehicular homicide when reckless driving causes the death of another person.
  • Florida Statute §316.192, addressing reckless driving.
  • Additional felony charges related to drug trafficking if supported by the investigation.

Any criminal charges will ultimately be determined by prosecutors based on the evidence and remain allegations unless proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court.

Potential Civil Claims for the Victims’ Families

In addition to any criminal prosecution, the families of those killed may have the right to pursue wrongful death claims under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).

If the suspect’s reckless or criminal conduct caused the collision, eligible surviving family members may be entitled to seek compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses.
  • Medical expenses incurred before death.
  • Loss of financial support and services.
  • Loss of companionship and protection.
  • Mental pain and suffering for qualifying survivors.

Civil claims are separate from criminal proceedings and may proceed regardless of the outcome of any criminal prosecution.

High-Speed Fleeing Incidents Carry Extraordinary Risks

Crashes involving drivers fleeing law enforcement often occur at extremely high speeds, leaving innocent motorists with little or no opportunity to avoid a collision.

This case also illustrates why many agencies carefully weigh whether initiating a ground pursuit would create an even greater danger to the public, opting instead to use aviation support when available.

Investigation Continues

The Casselberry Police Department continues to investigate the fatal crash, while the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office continues its criminal investigation into the suspected drug trafficking case.

Additional information, including the identities of the victims, the suspect’s condition, and the formal criminal charges, is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.

This devastating crash claimed the lives of two innocent people in an instant and underscores the tragic consequences that can result when individuals choose to flee law enforcement at dangerous speeds.

Our thoughts are with the victims’ families and loved ones as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
