Two Killed After Fleeing BMW Crashes Into Canal in Parkland, Suspect Arrested
A high-speed incident in Parkland, Florida ended in tragedy after a fleeing vehicle crashed into a canal, leaving two people dead and another suspect in custody, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities say the crash followed an earlier incident in Sunrise and involved multiple suspects.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, a 2025 BMW was involved in an incident in Sunrise and was seen fleeing at a high rate of speed near Nob Hill Road and Loxahatchee Road.
Deputies say an officer initially attempted to locate the vehicle but lost sight of it. While searching the area, law enforcement discovered the BMW submerged in a canal on the north side of Loxahatchee Road in Parkland.
Authorities later determined the vehicle had crashed into the canal due to its high speed.
One suspect, identified as 25-year-old Anthony Davis, was located nearby and taken into custody shortly after the crash.
Two additional individuals believed to be involved—identified as Jerome Turner and Kelby Broward-Richardson—were initially unaccounted for. Law enforcement deployed aviation, K-9, drone, and dive teams to search the area.
Both individuals were later found deceased in the canal by dive teams.
Criminal Allegations and Charges
Investigators say the incident began as an armed robbery in Sunrise.
Davis has been charged with:
- Robbery by snatching with a firearm or weapon
- Resisting an officer without violence
Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
The Dangers of High-Speed Flight From Law Enforcement
High-speed pursuits and attempts to flee from law enforcement present extreme risks to everyone involved.
Common dangers include:
- Loss of vehicle control at high speeds
- Increased likelihood of catastrophic crashes
- Danger to passengers, bystanders, and responding officers
- Reduced ability to react to roadway hazards
Crashes involving waterways, such as canals, can further complicate rescue efforts and increase the risk of fatal outcomes.
Legal Considerations in Fatal Crash Cases Involving Criminal Activity
When a crash occurs during the commission of a crime or while fleeing law enforcement, liability may extend beyond traffic violations.
Legal issues may include:
- Criminal responsibility for reckless or dangerous driving
- Potential civil liability for wrongful death
- Responsibility for injuries or fatalities resulting from the flight
- Additional penalties tied to underlying criminal conduct
These cases often involve both criminal prosecution and potential civil claims.
Wrongful Death Claims Under Florida Law
Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, surviving family members may have the right to pursue compensation if negligence or wrongful conduct contributed to a loved one’s death.
Damages may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship
- Mental pain and suffering
Each case depends on the specific facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigation Ongoing
The Broward Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash and the events leading up to it, including the alleged armed robbery and high-speed flight.
