Two Hospitalized After Vehicle Crashes Into Barrier Wall on I-75 in Lee County
Two people were hospitalized early Monday morning after a vehicle crashed into a barrier wall and overturned on Interstate 75 near Corkscrew Road in Lee County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The crash occurred around 2:13 a.m. in the southbound lanes near mile marker 123, a stretch of highway known for overnight traffic and reduced visibility.
FHP confirmed that a man and a woman were transported to a local hospital following the accident. The extent of their injuries has not yet been released, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Troopers reported that the vehicle struck a concrete barrier wall, causing it to flip over and come to rest on its roof. Emergency crews arrived on scene shortly after the crash and worked to safely extract both occupants from the vehicle.
Traffic in the area was temporarily slowed as first responders cleared debris and examined the wreckage.
While authorities have not yet determined the cause, early-morning crashes like this one often involve fatigue, distraction, or overcorrection — particularly on high-speed interstates like I-75.
Crashes involving only one vehicle — such as hitting a wall, guardrail, or median — account for nearly 40% of all fatal crashes in Florida, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV).
These collisions can happen for a variety of reasons:
- Driver fatigue during early morning or late-night hours
- Speeding or loss of control on curves or ramps
- Distraction from cell phones, GPS, or in-car technology
- Wet or slippery roads from overnight rain or dew
- Mechanical failures, such as tire blowouts or brake issues
- Sudden swerving to avoid animals or debris
Even when no other vehicle is involved, these incidents can cause devastating injuries — including head trauma, spinal cord damage, and internal bleeding — particularly if the vehicle overturns.
Liability in Single-Vehicle Crashes
Many people assume that a single-vehicle accident automatically means the driver is at fault, but that is not always the case. In some situations, outside factors or third-party negligence may have contributed to the crash.
Potential causes that could shift liability include:
- Defective vehicle components, such as brakes or tires (product liability).
- Poorly designed or maintained roads, missing guardrails, or inadequate signage.
- Construction hazards or debris left by contractors.
- Improperly functioning barriers or shoulder drop-offs.
An in-depth investigation can uncover whether the driver, vehicle manufacturer, or a government entity shares responsibility.
Under Florida’s comparative negligence statute (§768.81), multiple parties can be found partially at fault, and compensation may still be available even if the driver contributed to the crash.
Legal Rights After a Highway Crash
Victims of serious highway accidents — or their families — may be entitled to compensation for:
- Medical bills and hospitalization costs
- Rehabilitation and physical therapy
- Lost wages or reduced earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
- Vehicle repair or replacement
- Emotional distress and psychological trauma
If the crash results in a fatality, family members may pursue a wrongful death claim under the Florida Wrongful Death Act (§§768.16–768.26) for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and future financial support.
Because insurers often attempt to minimize payouts in single-vehicle cases, having an experienced attorney can ensure that every potential cause and responsible party is identified.
