Two Dead, One Injured in Crash on Roosevelt Boulevard Near NAS Jacksonville

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

Two people died and another was injured Thursday afternoon following a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 17 near Naval Air Station Jacksonville, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 12:50 p.m. on Roosevelt Boulevard and caused major traffic disruptions as all lanes were temporarily shut down north of NAS Jacksonville.

Authorities say the collision involved two sedans after one vehicle reportedly turned left in front of another traveling northbound on Roosevelt Boulevard.

The tragic crash highlights the serious dangers associated with left-turn collisions at busy intersections and raises important legal questions involving right-of-way violations, driver negligence, and wrongful death claims under Florida law.

What We Know About the Jacksonville Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 24-year-old woman was driving northbound in the left lane of Roosevelt Boulevard when another sedan, driven by a 66-year-old woman, attempted to turn left across traffic.

Troopers say the northbound sedan struck the left side of the turning vehicle.

Authorities reported that the 24-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The driver of the turning vehicle and her 78-year-old male passenger were both transported to a hospital, where they later died from their injuries.

The crash caused extensive traffic delays along Roosevelt Boulevard, with road closures extending from NAS Jacksonville to Timuquana Road before lanes gradually reopened later in the afternoon.

At this time, investigators have not publicly released:

  • Whether speed played a role
  • Whether traffic signals were involved
  • Whether visibility or roadway conditions contributed
  • Whether any citations are expected

The crash remains under investigation.

Left-Turn Collisions Are Among the Most Dangerous Types of Crashes

Accidents involving left-turning vehicles frequently result in serious or fatal injuries because drivers turning across traffic are vulnerable to direct side impacts.

These crashes commonly occur when:

  • Drivers misjudge the speed of oncoming traffic
  • Visibility is obstructed
  • Drivers fail to yield the right-of-way
  • Traffic conditions become congested

Side-impact or “T-bone” collisions can cause catastrophic injuries because vehicle occupants have less structural protection on the sides of vehicles compared to the front or rear.

Victims may suffer:

  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Internal bleeding
  • Chest injuries
  • Spinal cord trauma
  • Fatal blunt force injuries

Older adults are often especially vulnerable to severe injury during side-impact collisions.

Florida Right-of-Way Laws and Left-Turn Accidents

Under Florida traffic law, drivers making left turns generally must yield to oncoming traffic that is close enough to create an immediate hazard.

Investigators will likely examine:

  • Traffic signal timing
  • Vehicle speeds
  • Driver visibility
  • Intersection layout
  • Witness statements
  • Roadway evidence

Although left-turning drivers are often presumed to bear responsibility in these collisions, investigators still review all contributing factors before determining fault.

Potential Wrongful Death Claims After Fatal Car Accidents

The deaths of the 66-year-old driver and 78-year-old passenger may potentially give rise to wrongful death claims under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Fla. Stat. § 768.16–768.26.

Potential damages may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical expenses incurred before death
  • Loss of companionship and support
  • Mental pain and suffering

Wrongful death claims are generally brought by the personal representative of the deceased persons’ estates on behalf of surviving family members.

Busy Corridors Like Roosevelt Boulevard Often Experience Serious Crashes

Roosevelt Boulevard is a heavily traveled roadway serving commuters, commercial traffic, and military personnel traveling near NAS Jacksonville.

High-traffic corridors frequently experience crashes involving:

  • Left-turn conflicts
  • Sudden stops
  • Congestion
  • Distracted driving
  • High-speed traffic flow

Investigators may continue reviewing whether roadway design, traffic volume, or other conditions contributed to the collision.

The Importance of Thorough Crash Investigations

Fatal crash investigations often involve extensive accident reconstruction analysis.

Investigators may examine:

  • Vehicle damage patterns
  • Traffic signal data
  • Tire marks
  • Electronic vehicle data
  • Surveillance footage
  • Witness accounts

Prompt investigation is often critical in determining exactly how the crash occurred and whether preventable factors contributed to the collision.

Compassionate Guidance for Families After Fatal Florida Crashes

The deadly crash on Roosevelt Boulevard is another heartbreaking reminder of how quickly serious traffic accidents can devastate families and communities.

For surviving loved ones, the emotional and financial consequences of losing family members in a sudden collision can be overwhelming.

As the Florida Highway Patrol continues investigating the crash, additional details may emerge regarding the circumstances leading up to the collision.
