Two Construction Workers Seriously Injured in Overnight Work Zone Crash in Hillsborough County
Two construction workers were seriously injured early Wednesday morning after a crash in an active work zone on State Road 574 in Hillsborough County, Florida, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident highlights the dangers road crews face while working overnight in active traffic conditions.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 3:30 a.m. on April 15, 2026, west of Bismark Palm Drive. Investigators say a 37-year-old Tampa man was driving a GMC Yukon westbound when he entered an active construction zone.
Troopers report that the driver struck a Ford F-550 construction truck carrying two workers, despite the vehicle’s caution lights being activated. The impact caused serious injuries to both workers, identified as a 20-year-old and a 36-year-old, both from Bradenton.
The injured workers were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the GMC Yukon sustained only minor injuries and was cited for careless driving.
The Dangers of Work Zone Accidents
Construction zones are among the most hazardous environments on roadways, particularly during overnight hours when visibility is reduced.
Common risk factors include:
- Drivers failing to slow down in work zones
- Reduced visibility in early morning or nighttime conditions
- Distracted or inattentive driving
- Workers positioned close to active traffic lanes
Even with warning lights and signage, workers remain vulnerable to serious injury.
Legal Considerations in Work Zone Crashes
Drivers are required to exercise heightened caution when traveling through construction zones. Failure to do so can result in both criminal citations and civil liability.
Potential liability may involve:
- Negligent drivers who fail to obey reduced speed limits or warning signals
- Employers or contractors, depending on safety protocols in place
- Government entities responsible for roadway design and signage
Because work zone crashes often involve commercial vehicles and multiple parties, investigations can be complex.
Compensation for Injured Workers
Construction workers injured in roadway incidents may have multiple avenues for recovery depending on the circumstances.
Potential compensation may include:
- Workers’ compensation benefits
- Medical expenses and rehabilitation costs
- Lost wages and reduced earning capacity
- Pain and suffering through third-party claims
In cases involving negligent drivers, injured workers may be able to pursue claims beyond workers’ compensation.
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and the circumstances surrounding the collision.
