Two Children Critically Injured in Gainesville Intersection Crash on State Road 24
A serious morning crash in Alachua County, Florida left two young children critically injured after a collision at a Gainesville-area intersection, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash involved a turning SUV and an oncoming sedan and highlights the dangers of failing to yield at intersections.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 7:20 a.m. on April 22, 2026, at the intersection of State Road 24 and Southwest 122nd Street.
Investigators say a 17-year-old driver was traveling northbound in an SUV in the left-turn lane and attempted to turn onto SW 122nd Street while facing a flashing yellow left-turn arrow.
Troopers report that the teen entered the intersection and made the turn but failed to yield to a southbound sedan driven by a 38-year-old woman, entering directly into its path.
The vehicles collided, with the front right of the SUV striking the front right of the sedan.
The sedan carried two child passengers—an 8-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy—both of whom suffered critical injuries and were transported to local hospitals.
Both drivers sustained minor injuries.
Authorities noted that neither the driver of the sedan nor the two children were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The teen driver of the SUV was wearing a seat belt.
The Dangers of Left-Turn and Failure-to-Yield Crashes
Left-turn collisions are among the most common causes of serious intersection crashes, particularly when drivers misjudge oncoming traffic.
Key risks include:
- Misinterpreting flashing yellow turn signals
- Failing to yield to oncoming vehicles
- Limited reaction time for approaching drivers
- High-impact side or front-end collisions
These crashes can be especially severe when passengers—particularly children—are involved.
The Importance of Seat Belt Use
Seat belts play a critical role in preventing serious injury or death during a crash.
Failure to wear a seat belt can:
- Increase the risk of ejection from the vehicle
- Lead to more severe head and internal injuries
- Significantly raise the likelihood of fatal outcomes
In this crash, the lack of seat belt use may have contributed to the severity of the children’s injuries.
Legal Considerations in Intersection Crashes
Crashes involving failure to yield often involve clear right-of-way issues, but liability must still be carefully evaluated.
Investigators may examine:
- Traffic signal timing and driver compliance
- Speed and positioning of both vehicles
- Seat belt usage and injury causation
- Eyewitness statements and crash reconstruction
Liability may rest with the turning driver, though all factors are considered.
Compensation for Injury Victims
Families of injured children may be entitled to compensation for:
- Emergency medical treatment and hospitalization
- Long-term care and rehabilitation
- Pain and suffering
- Future medical needs
Cases involving child injuries often require extensive medical and legal evaluation.
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and determine all contributing factors.
