The Risks Cyclists Face on Roadways

Cyclists are among the most vulnerable road users and are at a significantly higher risk of serious injury in collisions with motor vehicles.

Crashes involving cyclists often result in severe injuries due to:

  • Lack of physical protection
  • Direct exposure to impact
  • Being thrown from the bicycle

Group rides can be especially dangerous if drivers are not attentive or fail to give adequate space.

Common Causes of Bicycle vs. Vehicle Crashes

While the cause of this crash has not yet been determined, common contributing factors include:

  • Driver inattention or distraction
  • Failure to yield to cyclists
  • Unsafe passing or lack of clearance
  • Speeding or roadway design issues

Investigators will work to determine how the collision occurred and whether any traffic laws were violated.

In crashes involving cyclists, investigators typically evaluate:

  • Whether the driver exercised reasonable care
  • Whether the cyclists were riding in accordance with traffic laws
  • Road conditions and visibility

Florida law requires drivers to maintain a safe distance when passing cyclists and to remain vigilant for their presence on the road.

Compensation for Injured Cyclists

Cyclists injured in crashes may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Medical expenses
