Truck Carrying Sod Overturns on Alligator Alley, Seriously Injuring Miami Driver

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A serious commercial vehicle crash shut down northbound Interstate 75 along Alligator Alley in Collier County on Saturday morning after a truck carrying sod overturned, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash temporarily blocked all northbound lanes and resulted in significant traffic delays for motorists traveling toward Florida’s Gulf Coast. Emergency crews responded to the scene, and a medical helicopter was dispatched to transport the injured driver to a nearby trauma center.

The crash remains under investigation.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 6:57 a.m. on June 20, 2026, near mile marker 86 on Interstate 75 in Collier County.

Investigators reported that a truck transporting sod was traveling northbound when the driver attempted to avoid another vehicle that allegedly made an improper lane change.

Troopers say the 71-year-old driver from Miami steered to avoid a collision but lost control of the truck. The vehicle subsequently overturned, scattering its load and blocking all northbound lanes of traffic.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to assist the driver and manage traffic congestion.

Driver Airlifted With Serious Injuries

Due to the severity of the crash, a medical helicopter landed at the scene and transported the driver to a hospital for treatment.

According to FHP, the driver suffered serious injuries.

Authorities have not released additional information regarding his condition.

No other injuries were immediately reported.

Traffic Disrupted Along Major Florida Corridor

The crash caused a complete shutdown of northbound Interstate 75 for a period of time while emergency crews worked to clear the overturned truck and investigate the collision.

Alligator Alley serves as one of Florida’s most important transportation corridors, connecting South Florida with Southwest Florida and the Gulf Coast.

Even short-term closures can result in substantial traffic backups due to the limited alternate routes available through the region.

Traffic delays continued after the initial closure as crews removed the vehicle and debris from the roadway.

All lanes have since reopened.

Improper Lane Changes Can Lead to Serious Crashes

Although investigators have not identified the driver of the vehicle that allegedly made the lane change, Florida Highway Patrol reports indicate that the truck driver took evasive action after another motorist entered his lane improperly.

Under Florida Statute §316.085, drivers must ensure that lane changes can be made safely before moving from one lane to another.

Unsafe lane changes are a common cause of serious highway crashes and can create dangerous situations for larger commercial vehicles that require additional distance and time to maneuver safely.

Investigators will likely examine witness statements, vehicle evidence, and any available traffic camera footage to determine whether another driver’s actions contributed to the crash.

Challenges Facing Commercial Truck Drivers

Commercial vehicles carrying heavy loads face unique risks when sudden evasive maneuvers become necessary.

Factors that may affect a truck’s stability include:

  • Cargo weight and distribution
  • Vehicle speed
  • Roadway conditions
  • Steering input
  • Load shifting
  • Tire condition
  • Weather conditions

When drivers are forced to make abrupt steering corrections, the risk of rollover crashes increases significantly, particularly for trucks carrying heavy or elevated loads.

Potential Liability Following a Commercial Vehicle Crash

While the investigation remains ongoing, several legal issues may be examined.

If another driver made an unsafe lane change that caused the truck driver to lose control, liability could potentially extend beyond the driver of the overturned truck.

Investigators may evaluate:

  • Whether an improper lane change occurred
  • Whether the truck was being operated safely
  • Vehicle speeds
  • Cargo loading practices
  • Driver actions before the crash
  • Roadway conditions

Under Florida’s modified comparative negligence system (Florida Statute §768.81), fault can be apportioned among multiple parties when more than one factor contributes to a collision.

Any determination regarding liability will depend on the evidence uncovered during the investigation.

Commercial Vehicle Safety Remains Critical on Florida Highways

Florida’s highways carry thousands of commercial vehicles each day, many transporting construction materials, agricultural products, landscaping supplies, and consumer goods.

Motorists sharing the road with commercial trucks can improve safety by:

  • Avoiding blind spots
  • Leaving adequate following distance
  • Making lane changes carefully
  • Allowing trucks additional stopping distance
  • Avoiding sudden maneuvers around large vehicles

These precautions become particularly important on high-speed corridors such as Interstate 75.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Officials have not announced whether any citations will be issued or whether additional vehicles were involved beyond the alleged improper lane change.

Additional information may become available as investigators complete their review.

A Reminder for Florida Drivers

This crash serves as a reminder of how quickly a routine highway trip can turn into a serious emergency.

A single unsafe maneuver can force drivers—particularly operators of large commercial vehicles—to make split-second decisions that can result in devastating consequences.

Our thoughts are with the injured driver as he recovers from this serious crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol investigation remains ongoing.
