Tragedy in Yulee: 57-Year-Old Bicyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash Involving Suspected Kia Telluride

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A devastating hit-and-run crash in Nassau County has left a 57-year-old Sarasota woman dead and authorities searching for answers. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the incident occurred late Thursday night, around 11 p.m., on Chester Road near Sweetbriar Lane in Yulee, Florida.

The woman, who has not yet been publicly identified, was riding her bicycle northbound on Chester Road when she was struck from behind by a white Kia Telluride, believed to be a 2020–2022 model. The vehicle reportedly has damage to the front and right side, consistent with the collision.

The impact fatally injured the cyclist. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, leaving the woman behind without rendering aid, an action that constitutes a felony hit-and-run under Florida law.

By Friday afternoon, FHP confirmed that the suspected Kia Telluride has been located, though no arrests have been made. The case remains under active investigation. Authorities are working to determine who was behind the wheel at the time of the crash and whether any criminal charges will be filed.

In Florida, drivers involved in any crash are legally required to:

  • Stop immediately at the scene,
  • Provide information (name, contact, insurance),
  • Render aid if someone is injured.

Failing to do so, especially when a death occurs, is a first-degree felony punishable by:

  • Up to 30 years in prison,
  • Fines up to $10,000,
  • Permanent license revocation in some cases.

The law also provides for civil liability, meaning the victim’s family may pursue a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver or vehicle owner.

Can the Victim’s Family Pursue a Wrongful Death Claim?

Yes. Even though the at-fault driver fled the scene, the victim’s surviving family may have the right to file a wrongful death claim if and when the driver is identified. Under Florida Statutes § 768.19, eligible survivors may include:

  • Spouse,
  • Children,
  • Parents,
  • Dependent relatives.

Damages in a wrongful death claim may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses,
  • Loss of companionship and support,
  • Pain and suffering of survivors,
  • Medical expenses related to the crash.

If the driver is uninsured or underinsured, uninsured motorist coverage (UM) from the victim’s own auto policy (if available) may help provide compensation.

This tragic incident is another painful reminder of the dangers bicyclists face on Florida roads. In 2024, Florida consistently ranked among the top states for bicycle-related fatalities, often due to distracted or reckless drivers. Hit-and-run crashes in particular have become a growing concern, highlighting the need for stronger enforcement and public awareness.

If you witness a hit-and-run crash or come across a crash scene:

  • Call 911 immediately and provide location details.
  • Note any vehicle information: color, make, model, license plate, or distinguishing features.
  • Provide your account to law enforcement and stay at the scene if possible.

Even small details can make a difference in identifying and prosecuting those responsible.
