Three People Found Dead After Pickup Truck Discovered Submerged in Palm Beach County Canal

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

Three people were found dead Tuesday morning after an overturned pickup truck was discovered submerged in a canal in Belle Glade, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

Authorities are investigating how the vehicle entered the canal and how long it had been underwater before it was discovered.

What We Know About the Incident

According to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue, emergency crews responded at approximately 7:20 a.m. on July 15, 2026, to a report of a vehicle in a roadside canal along Gator Boulevard in Belle Glade.

A 911 caller reported seeing the pickup truck submerged in the water but did not witness the vehicle enter the canal.

When first responders arrived, they found:

  • An overturned pickup truck submerged in a narrow roadside canal.
  • Only the vehicle’s wheels were visible above the surface of the water.
  • Palm Beach County Fire Rescue dive teams searched both the vehicle and the surrounding canal.

Three occupants were located inside or near the vehicle and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The identities of the victims have not been released pending notification of their families.

Investigation Underway

After the recovery operation concluded, the scene was turned over to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, which is leading the investigation.

At this time, authorities have not released:

  • When the crash occurred.
  • How long the vehicle was submerged.
  • What caused the pickup truck to enter the canal.
  • Whether speed, impairment, medical issues, or weather played a role.

Investigators will likely examine physical evidence, roadway conditions, vehicle damage, witness statements, and any available surveillance footage to determine what happened.

Canal Crashes Present Unique Dangers in Florida

Florida’s extensive network of canals located alongside highways and rural roads presents unique hazards for motorists.

Vehicles that leave the roadway and enter water can quickly become submerged, making escape difficult and significantly reducing the chances of survival.

In many cases, these crashes occur without witnesses, delaying emergency response until the vehicle is discovered hours later.

Although the cause of this tragedy has not yet been determined, surviving family members may have legal rights if the investigation concludes that another person’s negligence or another contributing factor caused the crash.

Depending on the facts, a wrongful death claim may arise if the collision resulted from:

  • Another driver’s negligent or reckless conduct.
  • Dangerous roadway design or inadequate maintenance.
  • Defective vehicle components, such as steering, brakes, or tires.
  • Improper roadway signage or barriers.
  • Negligence by a government entity or contractor responsible for roadway safety.

Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26), eligible surviving family members may be able to pursue compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses.
  • Medical expenses incurred before death.
  • Loss of financial support and services.
  • Loss of companionship, guidance, and protection.
  • Mental pain and suffering for qualifying survivors.

Every wrongful death case is unique, and liability depends on the evidence uncovered during the investigation.

Preserving Evidence Is Important

Fatal crash investigations often rely on evidence that must be preserved as early as possible.

Important evidence may include:

  • Vehicle event data recorder (“black box”) information.
  • Crash scene photographs.
  • Tire marks and roadway evidence.
  • Surveillance or traffic camera footage.
  • Vehicle inspection and maintenance records.
  • Witness statements.
  • Autopsy and toxicology reports, when applicable.

A thorough investigation can help determine exactly what occurred and whether negligence contributed to the crash.

Investigation Continues

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal canal crash in Belle Glade.

Additional information, including the identities of the victims and the cause of the incident, is expected to be released as investigators complete their review.

Remembering the Victims

The loss of three lives in a single crash is a heartbreaking tragedy for their families, friends, and the Belle Glade community. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone affected during this incredibly difficult time as they await answers about what happened.
