Three Injured in I-10 Crash Involving Pickup Truck and Trailer in Okaloosa County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A two-vehicle crash involving a pickup truck towing a large trailer and a minivan shut down part of Interstate 10 in Okaloosa County Sunday night, leaving three people injured and closing lanes for several hours.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. on westbound I-10 near mile marker 43.

While authorities reported only minor injuries, one passenger was transported to a local hospital as a trauma alert, highlighting the potential dangers associated with crashes involving large trailers and commercial-sized loads on Florida highways.

What We Know About the Okaloosa County Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Ford F-250 driven by a 45-year-old Miami man was traveling westbound on Interstate 10 while towing a 40-foot gooseneck trailer carrying a Ram Sprinter van.

Troopers say a minivan driven by a 40-year-old Pensacola man was also traveling westbound in the same lane when it collided with the rear of the trailer.

Investigators reported that:

  • The minivan struck the back of the trailer
  • The impact caused the trailer to begin fishtailing
  • The pickup truck driver lost control of the vehicle
  • The truck crossed into the median and entered the tree line
  • The pickup eventually struck a large pine tree

Emergency crews responded to the scene and treated the occupants involved.

Three People Suffered Injuries

According to FHP:

  • The pickup truck driver suffered minor injuries
  • A 62-year-old passenger from Miami suffered injuries and was transported to a hospital as a trauma alert
  • The minivan driver suffered minor injuries

Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

However, crashes involving trailers and heavy vehicles can quickly become catastrophic due to the weight and momentum involved.

Trailer Sway and Fishtailing Can Lead to Serious Highway Accidents

One of the key factors reported in this crash was trailer fishtailing following the initial impact.

Trailer sway occurs when a trailer begins oscillating from side to side behind a towing vehicle.

Once severe sway develops, drivers may struggle to regain control.

Common causes of trailer instability include:

  • Rear-end impacts
  • Improper loading
  • Excessive speed
  • Sudden steering corrections
  • Equipment failures
  • Adverse weather conditions

When a driver loses control of a trailer, the resulting crash can involve multiple vehicles and significant roadway hazards.

Highway Crashes Involving Trailers Present Unique Risks

Vehicles towing large trailers require additional stopping distance and can be more difficult to maneuver during emergency situations.

Collisions involving trailers may result in:

  • Vehicle rollovers
  • Jackknife crashes
  • Loss of cargo
  • Multi-vehicle collisions
  • Severe occupant injuries

Investigators will likely continue examining the sequence of events that led to the collision and subsequent loss of control.

Interstate 10 Remains a Major Commercial Traffic Corridor

Interstate 10 serves as a critical transportation route across the Florida Panhandle and regularly accommodates commercial vehicles, recreational trailers, and long-distance travelers.

Heavy traffic combined with large vehicles can increase the severity of crashes when they occur.

Drivers traveling near vehicles towing trailers should:

  • Maintain safe following distances
  • Avoid lingering in blind spots
  • Anticipate longer stopping distances
  • Exercise caution when merging or changing lanes

These precautions can help reduce the risk of serious collisions.

Determining Liability After a Trailer Accident

Crash investigations involving trailers often require a detailed analysis of multiple factors.

Investigators may review:

  • Vehicle damage patterns
  • Trailer loading procedures
  • Driver actions
  • Mechanical inspections
  • Witness statements
  • Event data recorder information

Depending on the circumstances, liability may involve one or more drivers, vehicle owners, maintenance providers, or other parties.

Individuals injured in Florida motor vehicle accidents may be entitled to compensation for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Future medical treatment
  • Lost wages
  • Reduced earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Rehabilitation costs

The available recovery depends on the facts of the case and the extent of the injuries sustained.

Preserving Evidence After a Serious Highway Crash

Evidence can disappear quickly following a crash involving large vehicles or trailers.

Important evidence may include:

  • Photographs of the scene
  • Vehicle inspection reports
  • Trailer maintenance records
  • Surveillance footage
  • Witness testimony
  • Electronic vehicle data

Prompt investigation can help preserve critical information and protect the rights of injured victims.

Compassionate Guidance After a Florida Highway Accident

The Interstate 10 crash in Okaloosa County serves as a reminder that even seemingly minor collisions can quickly escalate into dangerous situations when trailers and large vehicles are involved.

While all reported injuries were described as minor, the crash demonstrates how rapidly control can be lost following an impact at highway speeds.

As the Florida Highway Patrol continues its investigation, additional information may emerge regarding the circumstances that led to the collision and loss of control.
