Three Injured During Illegal Street Takeover in Gladeview, Suspect Sought by Miami-Dade Deputies

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

Three people were injured Sunday after an illegal street takeover in Gladeview, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. Investigators say the driver of a damaged black pickup truck fled the scene and remains at large.

The incident occurred just hours after a separate street takeover elsewhere in Miami-Dade County in which a sheriff’s deputy suffered minor burns when a firework was thrown and exploded nearby, highlighting the ongoing dangers associated with these illegal events.

What We Know About the Incident

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a street takeover at the intersection of Northwest 25th Street and Northwest 76th Avenue in Gladeview.

Authorities reported that:

  • An illegal street takeover was underway when deputies arrived.
  • Three people were injured during the incident.
  • Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported all three victims to local hospitals.
  • Officials have not released the identities or conditions of those injured.

During the investigation, deputies determined that a suspect driving a black pickup truck with front-end damage fled the area before officers could take the driver into custody.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains active.

Witnesses Describe Chaos

Residents reported hearing vehicles performing dangerous stunts before the crash.

One witness described hearing vehicles “doing donuts” along with fireworks, saying the noise was loud enough to shake nearby homes.

Authorities have not released additional information regarding how the injuries occurred or whether the fleeing pickup truck struck any of the victims.

Another Street Takeover Injured a Deputy Earlier That Day

Earlier on Sunday, another illegal street takeover in Northwest Miami-Dade resulted in injuries to a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy.

According to authorities, a suspect launched a firework toward responding deputies, causing it to explode near one deputy and leaving the deputy with minor burns to a hand.

Investigators have not indicated whether the two incidents are connected.

Florida Strengthened Penalties for Street Takeovers

In 2024, Florida enacted tougher penalties targeting illegal street racing, stunt driving, and coordinated street takeovers.

Under Florida Statute §316.191, participating in or organizing street racing and stunt driving activities can result in criminal charges, driver’s license suspension, vehicle impoundment, and substantial fines.

Florida law also formally defines and prohibits coordinated street takeovers, allowing law enforcement agencies to pursue enhanced enforcement against organizers and participants.

Depending on the circumstances, additional criminal charges may apply if injuries occur during these events or if participants flee from law enforcement.

Individuals injured during illegal street takeovers may have the right to pursue compensation if another person’s negligent or reckless conduct caused their injuries.

Depending on the circumstances, injured victims may be entitled to recover damages for:

  • Medical expenses.
  • Future medical treatment.
  • Lost wages.
  • Reduced earning capacity.
  • Pain and suffering.
  • Other damages permitted under Florida law.

Civil liability may extend beyond a single driver depending on the facts of the case, including whether multiple participants contributed to creating dangerous conditions.

Street Takeovers Continue to Pose Serious Public Safety Risks

Illegal street takeovers often involve speeding, drifting, burnouts, blocked intersections, fireworks, and large crowds gathered dangerously close to moving vehicles.

These events create significant risks not only for participants but also for innocent motorists, nearby residents, pedestrians, emergency responders, and spectators.

Law enforcement agencies throughout Florida continue to increase enforcement efforts to discourage these dangerous gatherings and hold organizers accountable.

Investigation Continues

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the Gladeview street takeover and is searching for the driver of the black pickup truck that fled the scene.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers.

Community Safety Remains a Priority

Illegal street takeovers can escalate quickly from reckless driving exhibitions to serious injury crashes. As this investigation continues, authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward to help identify those responsible.

Our thoughts are with those injured, and we hope they make a full recovery.
