Three Hospitalized, Including Pedestrian, After Crash in Northwest Miami-Dade
Three people, including a pedestrian, were hospitalized Thursday morning following a serious crash at a busy intersection in northwest Miami-Dade, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred around 11 a.m. at the intersection of Northwest 54th Street and Northwest 23rd Avenue in the Brownsville neighborhood.
Investigators said two vehicles collided in the intersection, and the force of the impact caused one of the vehicles to be redirected into a pedestrian who was nearby. The pedestrian, identified as a woman, was struck as a result of the collision.
Emergency responders transported the pedestrian and the two drivers — a man and a woman — to local hospitals. Authorities reported that all three victims were in stable condition.
Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed significant damage to both vehicles involved in the crash. Debris was scattered across the roadway, including a wheel that appeared to have separated from one of the vehicles, highlighting the severity of the impact.
Traffic in the area was impacted as deputies worked to secure the scene and investigate the cause of the crash.
Crashes at intersections are among the most dangerous traffic incidents, particularly when pedestrians are present. When vehicles collide at speed, they can easily be pushed into sidewalks or crosswalks, placing pedestrians at extreme risk even if they are obeying traffic signals.
Common contributing factors in these types of crashes include:
- Failure to yield the right of way
- Speeding or aggressive driving
- Distracted driving
- Red-light or stop-sign violations
- Poor visibility or roadway design issues
When a pedestrian is injured due to a vehicle-to-vehicle collision, multiple parties may share liability, depending on how the crash occurred.
Legal Options for Injured Pedestrians and Drivers
Under Florida law, pedestrians injured in traffic crashes may have the right to pursue compensation through a personal injury claim. Even if the pedestrian was not directly struck by the vehicle that caused the initial collision, liability may still exist.
Potential compensation can include:
- Medical expenses and future treatment
- Lost wages and reduced earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
- Rehabilitation and therapy costs
Drivers involved in the crash may also have claims, depending on fault and insurance coverage.
While law enforcement determines how a crash occurred, their investigation is not focused on identifying civil liability or maximizing compensation for victims. An independent investigation can help uncover:
- Traffic-camera or surveillance footage
- Vehicle speed and impact data
- Witness statements
- Roadway or signal timing issues
This evidence can be critical in protecting the rights of injured pedestrians and motorists.
