Three Hospitalized After Rollover Crash on I-95 in Fort Lauderdale
A serious rollover crash on Interstate 95 in Fort Lauderdale left three people hospitalized — including one with life-threatening injuries — and shut down all southbound lanes near Broward Boulevard, according to local officials.
The crash occurred Sunday afternoon and caused significant disruption along one of South Florida’s busiest highways as emergency crews worked to treat victims and clear the scene.
According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, the crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-95 near Broward Boulevard.
When first responders arrived:
- A black vehicle was overturned on the highway
- A silver car and another black vehicle also sustained heavy damage
- Debris was scattered across multiple lanes
Emergency crews transported three individuals to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. Officials confirmed that one victim suffered life-threatening injuries, while the conditions of the other injured individuals were not immediately released.
The crash forced the closure of all southbound lanes, causing traffic to back up for miles throughout Fort Lauderdale.
A witness told reporters he believed the driver of the overturned SUV may have been experiencing a medical emergency prior to the crash and had earlier struck plastic roadway poles and another vehicle. However, the Florida Highway Patrol has not confirmed those details and continues to investigate the cause of the collision.
Determining whether a medical emergency, mechanical issue, or driver negligence contributed to the crash will be a key part of the investigation.
Rollover crashes are among the most dangerous types of motor vehicle collisions. When vehicles overturn, occupants face a significantly higher risk of catastrophic injury due to:
- Roof crush injuries
- Ejection from the vehicle
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Internal bleeding
Multi-vehicle rollover crashes can also injure occupants of other vehicles that become involved in the chain reaction.
Liability in Multi-Vehicle Highway Crashes
When multiple vehicles are involved, determining liability can be complex. Investigators typically evaluate:
- Driver actions leading up to the crash
- Whether a medical emergency occurred
- Vehicle maintenance or mechanical issues
- Road and traffic conditions
- Surveillance or dash camera footage
Even if a driver experienced a sudden medical event, liability may still depend on whether the episode was foreseeable or whether other factors contributed to the crash.
Under Florida’s comparative negligence law (§768.81), more than one party may share responsibility for a crash and resulting injuries.
Legal Rights After a Serious Florida Car Accident
Victims injured in serious highway crashes may be entitled to pursue compensation for:
- Emergency medical care and hospitalization
- Future medical treatment and rehabilitation
- Lost wages and reduced earning capacity
- Pain and suffering
- Long-term disability
Because evidence can quickly disappear after a major crash, it is critical to begin an independent investigation as soon as possible.
