Three Children Among Five Hospitalized After SUV Crashes Into Orange County Daycare

Flanagan & Bodenheimer

At least three children and two adults were hospitalized after an SUV crashed into a daycare facility in Orange County, Florida, on Thursday afternoon, October 15, 2026.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the collision occurred shortly before 3 p.m. at 1211 North Pine Hills Road, near the intersection of Elinore Drive.

Investigators said a 79-year-old Orlando man was driving a 2003 Honda CR-V southbound on Pine Hills Road when, for reasons that remain unknown, the vehicle left the roadway.

The SUV crossed the median and the northbound travel lanes before crashing into the daycare building.

FHP reported that at least three children and one adult inside the facility were transported to hospitals, along with the SUV’s driver.

Authorities shut down Pine Hills Road in both directions while emergency crews responded and investigators examined the scene.

The severity of the injuries has not been disclosed.

What Happened in the Orange County Daycare Crash?

The crash occurred just before 3 p.m. Thursday at a daycare located at 1211 North Pine Hills Road in Orange County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2003 Honda CR-V was traveling southbound on Pine Hills Road and approaching Elinore Drive.

For reasons investigators have not yet determined, the 79-year-old driver lost his intended path of travel and left the roadway.

The SUV crossed the center median, continued across the northbound lanes and struck the daycare facility.

Several people inside the building were injured.

Troopers reported that at least three children and one adult from the daycare were hospitalized.

The driver was also transported to a hospital.

Authorities have not identified the injured individuals or released details about their medical conditions.

Three Children and Daycare Adult Injured

The collision resulted in injuries to multiple people who were inside the daycare when the SUV struck the building.

FHP confirmed that at least three children were taken to hospitals following the crash.

One adult inside the facility was also hospitalized.

The 79-year-old driver sustained injuries requiring hospital transportation.

Although the initial report indicated that as many as three children and up to two adults were injured, the confirmed hospital transports included at least three children, one daycare adult and the driver.

Officials have not disclosed the children’s ages or the nature of their injuries.

It is also unclear how many people were inside the daycare at the time of the collision or whether additional occupants required medical evaluation.

Vehicle crashes into occupied buildings can cause injuries from the initial impact, falling debris, broken glass and damaged structural components.

However, investigators have not released details explaining how the children and adult inside the daycare were injured.

SUV Crossed Median and Northbound Lanes Before Striking Building

One of the most significant details reported by investigators is the path the Honda CR-V traveled before striking the daycare.

According to FHP, the SUV was initially heading southbound on North Pine Hills Road.

The driver then left the roadway, crossed the median and traveled across the northbound lanes before colliding with the building.

This sequence suggests the vehicle traveled across multiple portions of the roadway before reaching the daycare property.

However, the initial report does not specify how far the SUV traveled after leaving its lane, whether the driver attempted to brake or steer, or whether the vehicle struck any other objects before reaching the building.

Investigators have also not disclosed the SUV’s speed at the time of the collision.

The vehicle’s movements and the physical evidence at the scene may be important in determining what caused the driver to leave the roadway.

Pine Hills Road Closed in Both Directions

The crash prompted authorities to close all lanes of North Pine Hills Road in both directions.

The Florida Highway Patrol announced the closure while emergency personnel responded and investigators worked at the scene.

Road closures following crashes involving occupied buildings may be necessary to allow emergency medical treatment, vehicle removal and evaluation of potential structural hazards.

However, officials have not released information about the extent of damage to the daycare building or whether structural engineers were called to inspect the property.

The initial report also did not provide an estimated time for reopening the roadway.

Drivers traveling through the area were advised to avoid the closure and use alternate routes.

What Caused the Driver to Leave the Roadway?

The Florida Highway Patrol has not determined why the 79-year-old driver left the southbound lanes of Pine Hills Road.

Investigators may examine several factors to determine what caused the vehicle to cross the median and strike the daycare.

Potential considerations include:

  • The driver’s speed before leaving the roadway
  • Whether the driver attempted to brake or steer
  • Possible medical circumstances affecting the driver
  • The condition of the vehicle’s brakes and steering system
  • Whether an unexpected roadway hazard contributed
  • Traffic conditions near Elinore Drive
  • The vehicle’s path across the median and northbound lanes
  • Available surveillance footage
  • Statements from witnesses

These are potential investigative questions rather than established causes of the accident.

Authorities have not reported that the driver experienced a medical emergency or that distracted driving, impairment, speeding or mechanical failure contributed to the crash.

The driver’s age alone does not establish that a medical condition or age-related impairment caused the collision.

Florida Laws Relevant to Drivers Leaving the Roadway

Florida motorists are required to operate their vehicles with reasonable care and comply with applicable traffic laws.

Florida Statute § 316.183 requires drivers to maintain speeds that are reasonable and prudent under existing roadway and traffic conditions.

Florida Statute § 316.089 addresses driving within marked lanes and generally requires motorists to remain within a single lane unless a lane movement can be made safely.

These provisions may become relevant when investigating a collision in which a vehicle unexpectedly leaves its lane of travel.

However, a vehicle crossing a median does not automatically establish that the driver violated a traffic law.

Investigators must determine why the vehicle left the roadway and whether the driver failed to exercise reasonable care.

No citations or criminal charges were reported in the initial coverage of the Orange County crash.

When a vehicle strikes an occupied building and injures people inside, determining legal responsibility generally requires examining the driver’s actions and any other factors that may have contributed.

A driver may face civil liability if negligent conduct caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and strike the building.

Potential negligence could involve failing to maintain proper control, driving at an unsafe speed or failing to respond reasonably to roadway conditions.

However, an unexpected medical emergency or mechanical defect may raise different legal questions depending on the circumstances.

Under Florida negligence law, an injured person generally must establish that another party owed a legal duty, breached that duty and caused compensable harm.

The initial report does not establish that the driver acted negligently or explain what caused the collision.

Those questions remain subject to investigation.

Could the Daycare or Property Owner Be Held Responsible?

Crashes involving vehicles entering occupied buildings can also raise questions about property safety.

Depending on the circumstances, investigators may examine whether the location had protective barriers, how close occupied areas were to vehicle travel paths and whether a particular hazard was reasonably foreseeable.

However, Florida law does not automatically require every daycare or commercial building to have barriers capable of stopping an out-of-control vehicle.

Determining whether a property owner had a legal duty to implement additional protections requires examining the property layout, applicable building requirements, prior incidents and other relevant facts.

There is currently no information indicating that the daycare violated a safety requirement or that the building’s design contributed to the injuries.

The fact that an SUV entered the building does not, by itself, establish negligence by the daycare operator or property owner.

Special Considerations When Children Are Injured in Accidents

Accidents involving young children can present significant medical and legal concerns.

Children may require specialized treatment following traumatic injuries, and some injuries can have lasting effects on physical development, mobility and cognitive functioning.

Depending on the nature and severity of the injuries, recovery may involve hospitalization, rehabilitation, follow-up evaluations and ongoing medical care.

When another party’s negligence causes injuries to a child, Florida law may provide a basis for pursuing compensation for legally recoverable losses.

Claims involving minors can also involve additional procedural considerations, including requirements concerning settlement approval and the management of certain settlement proceeds.

However, the initial report does not disclose the ages of the children or the nature and severity of their injuries.

It is therefore too early to determine their potential long-term medical needs.

Evidence That May Be Important in the Daycare Crash Investigation

Because the SUV crossed the median and northbound lanes before striking an occupied building, reconstructing the vehicle’s path may be especially important.

Potential evidence may include:

  • Florida Highway Patrol crash reports
  • Photographs of the roadway and damaged building
  • Surveillance footage from the daycare or nearby businesses
  • Dash-camera recordings from passing motorists
  • Statements from witnesses
  • Vehicle damage and mechanical inspection findings
  • Tire marks and other roadway evidence
  • Vehicle event data recorder information, if available
  • Measurements of the median and roadway
  • Building inspection and damage reports
  • Emergency response records
  • Medical records documenting the injuries

These materials may help investigators determine why the SUV left its intended path and whether any person or entity bears legal responsibility for the resulting injuries.

Investigation Into Orange County Daycare Crash Continues

The October 15 crash at 1211 North Pine Hills Road left at least three children and two adults hospitalized after a 2003 Honda CR-V struck a daycare facility.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 79-year-old Orlando driver was traveling southbound near Elinore Drive when the SUV left the roadway, crossed the median and northbound lanes, and crashed into the building.

At least three children and one adult inside the daycare were transported to hospitals, along with the driver.

Authorities closed Pine Hills Road in both directions while responding to the scene.

The cause of the collision remains unknown, and officials have not released details about the injured individuals’ conditions.

We hope all the injured children and adults receive the care they need and are able to make a full recovery.
