Teen Girl Killed in Overnight Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-95 in Riviera Beach

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A tragic overnight crash on Interstate 95 in Riviera Beach, Florida claimed the life of a 16-year-old girl and shut down all northbound lanes for hours, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred just before 12:30 a.m. on May 13, 2026, near Exit 76 at Blue Heron Boulevard.

Investigators report:

  • The teen was driving a Nissan Altima northbound on I-95
  • She lost control of the vehicle, striking a guardrail and a concrete wall
  • The vehicle came to rest disabled in the roadway

Fatal Impact After Initial Crash

Authorities say:

  • After the crash, the teen exited the vehicle
  • She was leaning into the back seat when a BMW X3 collided with the disabled car
  • The impact threw the teen onto the shoulder of the highway

The 16-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Additional Vehicles Involved

Officials confirmed:

  • The driver of the BMW, a 21-year-old man from Jupiter, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital
  • A third driver, a 49-year-old man from Port St. Lucie, attempted to avoid the crash but struck the disabled vehicle and a concrete wall
  • The third driver was not injured

Traffic Impact

The crash caused major disruptions:

  • All northbound lanes of I-95 were shut down overnight
  • The closure extended into the morning commute
  • Traffic delays impacted the Riviera Beach area for several hours

The Danger of Secondary Crashes

This incident highlights the extreme danger of secondary crashes, especially on high-speed highways.

After an initial crash:

  • Vehicles stopped in travel lanes create unexpected hazards
  • Drivers approaching at highway speeds may not have time to react
  • Individuals outside their vehicles are at significant risk of being struck

Risks of Exiting a Vehicle on the Highway

Exiting a vehicle on an active interstate can be extremely dangerous.

Safety experts generally advise:

  • Moving as far off the roadway as possible
  • Remaining inside the vehicle when safe to do so
  • Calling for emergency assistance

Unfortunately, in fast-moving traffic, even a moment outside the vehicle can be life-threatening.

In cases like this, investigators may examine:

  • The cause of the initial crash
  • Whether drivers were maintaining safe speeds and following distances
  • Visibility and roadway conditions
  • Whether the secondary driver had sufficient time to avoid the collision

Liability in multi-vehicle crashes can be complex and may involve multiple contributing factors.

Wrongful Death Claims

Families who lose a loved one in a crash may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.

Compensation may include:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of future earnings
  • Emotional pain and suffering

Investigation Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
