Teen Critically Injured After Electric Scooter Crash with Pickup Truck in Orlando

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A heartbreaking crash in Orlando, Florida has left a 13-year-old boy in critical condition after his electric scooter collided with a pickup truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

What We Know About the Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on May 11, 2026, near the intersection of Savannah Pines Drive and Moss Park Road in the Lake Nona area, close to State Road 417.

Investigators report:

  • A pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Moss Park Road
  • The 13-year-old was riding an electric scooter across the roadway
  • The scooter entered the path of the pickup truck and was struck

Injuries Reported

Officials confirmed:

  • The teen suffered critical injuries and was transported to the hospital
  • The impact was severe, reportedly splitting the scooter in two
  • The driver of the pickup truck, a 53-year-old man, was not injured

Troopers say the driver remained at the scene and rendered aid following the crash.

A Tragic Circumstance

According to those close to the family, the teen had been on his way to buy flowers for his mother for Mother’s Day at the time of the crash.

Witnesses and family friends described the situation as devastating, noting that the teen’s injuries appear to be primarily related to a severe head impact.

The Dangers of Electric Scooter Accidents

Electric scooters have become increasingly popular, but they also present serious safety risks, especially for younger riders.

Common dangers include:

  • Lack of physical protection
  • Increased risk of head injuries
  • Limited visibility to drivers
  • Difficulty navigating busy roadways

Importance of Helmet Use

Head injuries are one of the leading causes of severe injury in scooter accidents.

Wearing a helmet can significantly reduce the risk of:

  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Long-term neurological damage
  • Fatal outcomes

In this case, reports indicate the teen was not wearing a helmet, which may have contributed to the severity of the injuries.

In accidents involving scooters and motor vehicles, investigators may evaluate:

  • Right-of-way at the intersection
  • Visibility and roadway conditions
  • Actions of both the driver and the rider

Even when a driver is not cited, liability can still be complex depending on the circumstances.

Potential Injury Claims

In serious injury cases involving minors, families may be able to pursue compensation for:

  • Emergency medical care
  • Ongoing treatment and rehabilitation
  • Long-term care needs
  • Pain and suffering

Investigation Ongoing

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and has not announced any charges at this time.
