Tavares Woman Arrested for DUI After Alleged Hit-and-Run and Pursuit in Leesburg
A 47-year-old Tavares woman was arrested Monday afternoon following an alleged hit-and-run crash and subsequent pursuit through a residential neighborhood in Leesburg, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred around 4:33 p.m. in Lake County.
Troopers say a 2009 Toyota Tacoma struck a Dodge Ram that was stopped at a red light.
After the collision, the driver of the Toyota allegedly fled the scene rather than remaining to exchange information, as required under Florida law.
Authorities identified the driver as Carlisle Gilleeny-Slingerland, 47, of Tavares.
According to FHP, troopers who were in the area responded quickly after the driver left the crash scene. The incident reportedly escalated into a pursuit through a residential neighborhood in Leesburg before the suspect was ultimately taken into custody.
Details regarding the length of the pursuit and whether additional property damage occurred have not yet been released.
FHP stated that Gilleeny-Slingerland faces pending DUI-related charges, along with charges connected to leaving the scene of a crash.
No serious injuries were reported in the initial collision.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Legal Implications of DUI and Hit-and-Run Crashes
Under Florida law, drivers involved in a crash are required to:
- Stop immediately
- Remain at the scene
- Provide identifying and insurance information
- Render reasonable aid if injuries are involved
Leaving the scene of a crash — particularly when impairment is suspected — can result in serious criminal charges.
When alcohol or drugs are involved, drivers may face:
- DUI charges
- Enhanced penalties if injuries occurred
- License suspension
- Civil liability for damages
Even in crashes initially described as minor, fleeing the scene can significantly increase both criminal consequences and civil exposure.
Civil Liability After a DUI Crash
Victims of DUI-related crashes may have the right to pursue compensation for:
- Vehicle damage
- Medical expenses
- Lost wages
- Pain and suffering
In certain cases involving gross negligence, such as DUI combined with fleeing law enforcement, punitive damages may also be considered.
Insurance coverage issues can become complex in hit-and-run cases, particularly if the at-fault driver attempts to evade responsibility.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash and pursuit in Leesburg.
