What We Know About the Incident
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident unfolded in multiple stages beginning late Thursday night near the Mango Road exit, just east of Interstate 75.
Initial Crash
Authorities report:
- Around 11:05 p.m., a 19-year-old woman driving a Kia Sorento lost control while traveling westbound on I-4

Fatal Impact
Officials say:
- A 23-year-old passenger from the Toyota exited the vehicle with injuries and was lying in the roadway
- A Hyundai Santa Cruz then struck the injured passenger
- The man died at the scene
Fatality and Injuries
Authorities confirmed:
- The 23-year-old passenger was killed
- The identity of the victim has not yet been released
- Additional injuries from the crashes have not been fully detailed
The Dangers of Secondary Crashes
This incident highlights the extreme danger of secondary crashes, which occur after an initial collision.
These crashes are often more dangerous because:
- Drivers may not expect stopped vehicles ahead
- Visibility may be reduced, especially at night
- Emergency and roadside workers are exposed to passing traffic
Even when lanes are closed and marked, high-speed roadways like I-4 remain hazardous.
Risks During Crash Investigations
Accidents occurring during active crash investigations can involve:
- Parked emergency or service vehicles
- Roadway obstructions
- Drivers failing to slow down or move over
Florida law requires drivers to move over or slow down for emergency and service vehicles, but violations still occur.
Legal Considerations
In complex, multi-stage crashes like this, investigators will examine:
- Whether drivers were traveling at safe speeds
- Compliance with Florida’s “Move Over” law
- Visibility and warning measures in place at the scene
- Driver distraction or impairment
Liability may involve multiple parties depending on the sequence of events.
Wrongful Death Claims
Families who lose a loved one in a crash may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.
Compensation may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of income and support
- Emotional pain and suffering
These cases often require detailed investigation, especially when multiple collisions are involved.
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident and has not yet released all details.
