Authorities say the suspect has since been located and charged.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred on April 11, 2026, around 7:45 p.m. on Old Hopewell Road near Henry George Road. Investigators say a 27-year-old man driving a Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound when he crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a motorcycle.
The impact ejected both riders from the motorcycle. The driver, identified as 37-year-old Giovanny Negron Talavera, was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to the hospital.

Rapalo-Lorenzo is now facing multiple charges, including leaving the scene of a crash involving death, leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, and driving without a valid license. Authorities also confirmed that an immigration detainer will be placed on him.
The Dangers of Head-On and Hit-and-Run Crashes
Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of motor vehicle accidents due to the combined speed and force of impact. When combined with a hit-and-run, the consequences can be even more severe.
Key risks include:
- Immediate and catastrophic injuries from direct impact
- Ejection from the vehicle, increasing fatality risk
- Delayed emergency aid when drivers flee
- Increased severity of injuries due to lack of immediate assistance
Leaving the scene of a crash not only violates the law but can significantly impact the survivability of victims.
Legal Implications in Hit-and-Run Fatality Cases
Drivers involved in crashes that result in injury or death are legally required to stop, remain at the scene, and render aid.
Potential legal consequences include:
- Felony charges for leaving the scene of a crash involving death
- Additional charges for serious bodily injury
- Civil liability for wrongful death and personal injury damages
In addition to criminal prosecution, victims and their families may pursue civil claims for compensation.
Wrongful Death and Injury Claims Under Florida Law
Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue compensation if negligence contributed to a fatal crash.
Damages may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical expenses incurred prior to death
- Loss of financial support and services
- Loss of companionship and protection
- Mental pain and suffering
The injured passenger may also have a claim for significant damages related to her critical injuries.
Investigation Ongoing
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash and is expected to release additional details as the case progresses.
