Six People Hospitalized After Wrong-Way Crash on I-95 Near Miami Gardens Drive
Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a serious wrong-way collision that hospitalized six people early Wednesday morning on Interstate 95 in Miami-Dade County. The crash occurred around 5:17 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Miami Gardens Drive and shut down four lanes of traffic for nearly two hours.
According to investigators, a black Chevrolet coupe was traveling south in the northbound lanes when it crashed head-on into a northbound blue Dodge sedan. The impact pushed the Dodge into the path of a semi-truck traveling behind it, causing a secondary collision.
Troopers reported that both occupants of the wrong-way Chevrolet were transported to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital with serious injuries. Four people inside the Dodge sedan suffered minor injuries and were also taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. The driver of the semi-truck was not reported injured.
All northbound lanes have since reopened as the Florida Highway Patrol continues its investigation into what caused the wrong-way driver to enter the interstate.
Wrong-way collisions are among the most dangerous and destructive types of traffic crashes. They often happen at high speeds and leave drivers with little to no time to react. In Florida, wrong-way crashes have been increasing over the past decade, especially in dense highway corridors like I-95, I-75, and Florida’s Turnpike.
Common causes include:
- Driver impairment or intoxication
- Confusion due to poorly marked ramps
- Fatigue or medical emergencies
- Distracted driving
- High-speed maneuvers to avoid traffic congestion
Because wrong-way crashes usually involve direct head-on impact, they frequently result in catastrophic or fatal injuries.
Even though driving the wrong way on an interstate is typically considered negligence per se, investigators still analyze all contributing factors to determine whether multiple parties may share fault.
Key considerations include:
- Whether the wrong-way driver was impaired
- How and where the vehicle entered the interstate
- Visibility and roadway signage
- Speed of the impacted vehicles
- Whether the semi-truck’s driver could safely avoid secondary impact
- Any mechanical issues with the wrong-way vehicle
Victims of wrong-way collisions may be entitled to pursue claims against the wrong-way driver, as well as potential third parties depending on the circumstances.
Legal Options for Those Injured in the I-95 Crash
Injured victims in the Dodge sedan may have several avenues of recovery:
- Personal injury protection (PIP) benefits under Florida’s no-fault law
- Bodily injury claims against the wrong-way driver
- Claims for lost wages, medical expenses, and pain and suffering
- Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage if the wrong-way driver lacks adequate insurance
If the semi-truck sustained damage or its driver was injured, additional insurance carriers may become involved, which can complicate the claims process.
For the two people in the Chevrolet who suffered serious injuries, liability will depend on the cause of the wrong-way entry. If impairment, defective signage, or mechanical failure contributed, additional claims may arise.
To determine who is legally responsible, investigators and attorneys typically examine:
- Traffic camera footage
- 911 calls and witness statements
- Black-box data from all involved vehicles
- Roadway skid marks and debris patterns
- Cellphone and toxicology records
- Entrance ramp signage and lighting conditions
Preserving this evidence early is essential for building a strong legal case.
