Severe Multi-Vehicle Crash on Florida’s Turnpike Causes Major Delays in Martin County

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A serious multi-vehicle crash involving semi-trucks caused major traffic disruptions Friday afternoon along Florida’s Turnpike in Martin County, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred just before noon on March 13, 2026, near mile marker 123 in the Hobe Sound area along Florida’s Turnpike.

Authorities say the crash involved multiple vehicles, including at least two semi-trucks, and led to significant delays for drivers traveling through the region.

According to investigators, weather conditions and traffic congestion played a role in the crash.

Officials reported that traffic had slowed or stopped due to weather-related conditions when a semi-truck failed to stop in time and collided with vehicles ahead of it.

The impact triggered a chain-reaction crash involving nine vehicles, including multiple passenger vehicles and commercial trucks.

During the collision, one of the semi-trucks overturned, further complicating the crash scene.

The crash caused substantial traffic backups along the Turnpike.

Officials reported that delays extended for miles into southern St. Lucie County as emergency crews responded and drivers attempted to navigate around the crash site.

At approximately 2:00 p.m., traffic cameras showed that both southbound lanes had reopened, though traffic remained slow while congestion cleared.

Drivers traveling in the northbound lanes also experienced significant slowdowns near the crash scene.

Multi-Vehicle Pile-Ups on Highways

Pile-up crashes on high-speed highways can occur when traffic suddenly slows or stops and drivers do not have enough time to react.

These crashes often involve chain reactions where one collision quickly leads to multiple vehicles being involved.

Common factors that contribute to pile-up crashes include:

  • Sudden traffic slowdowns
  • Reduced visibility due to weather
  • Following vehicles too closely
  • Distracted driving
  • Large commercial trucks requiring longer stopping distances

When tractor-trailers are involved, the force of the impact can push vehicles into additional lanes or cause secondary crashes.

Liability in Multi-Vehicle Truck Accidents

Crashes involving multiple vehicles and commercial trucks can involve complex liability issues.

Potential responsible parties may include:

  • The truck driver who initiated the crash
  • The trucking company or employer
  • Cargo loading companies
  • Other negligent drivers involved in the chain reaction
  • Maintenance providers responsible for truck safety

Commercial truck drivers must also comply with federal safety regulations, including rules governing driver fatigue, vehicle maintenance, and cargo securement.

Violations of these regulations may increase the risk of serious crashes.

Authorities continue to investigate the severe multi-vehicle crash on Florida’s Turnpike near mile marker 123 in Martin County.

Officials have not yet confirmed whether anyone was injured in the crash.

Drivers traveling through the area are advised to remain cautious as traffic conditions gradually return to normal.
