Serious Crash on Highway 98 Near Panama City Prompts Road Closures and Air Medical Response

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A serious crash on Highway 98 in Panama City prompted a large emergency response Saturday evening, including the reported landing of a medical helicopter near the scene.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the collision, which temporarily closed a portion of the highway and forced traffic to be rerouted in both directions.

What We Know About the Crash

According to local officials, the crash occurred on July 11, 2026, along Highway 98 near Laureno Place in Panama City.

Emergency responders reported that:

  • The collision occurred on Highway 98, also known as Back Beach Road.
  • Approximately one-half mile of the roadway was closed near the crash site.
  • Traffic in both directions was rerouted while emergency crews worked at the scene.
  • A medical helicopter was observed landing near the crash location, indicating at least one person may have suffered serious injuries.
  • The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.

Authorities have not yet released information regarding the number of vehicles involved, the number of people injured, or whether any fatalities occurred.

Investigation Underway

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Investigators will likely examine:

  • Vehicle speeds.
  • Driver distraction.
  • Possible impairment.
  • Right-of-way issues.
  • Roadway and weather conditions.
  • Physical evidence from the crash scene.
  • Witness statements.
  • Any available surveillance or dash camera footage.

No citations or criminal charges have been announced.

Air Medical Response Often Indicates Serious Injuries

Although officials have not confirmed the severity of any injuries, helicopters are typically requested when victims require rapid transport to a Level I or Level II trauma center.

Air medical transport is commonly used following crashes involving:

  • Life-threatening injuries.
  • Severe head or spinal trauma.
  • Multiple traumatic injuries.
  • Situations where ground transportation would delay emergency care.

The presence of a helicopter does not necessarily indicate a fatal crash, but it often reflects the seriousness of the incident.

Because the investigation remains ongoing, it is too early to determine who, if anyone, may be legally responsible for the collision.

If the crash was caused by another driver’s negligence, injured victims may have the right to pursue compensation through a personal injury claim.

Depending on the circumstances, compensation may include:

  • Emergency medical expenses.
  • Hospitalization and surgical costs.
  • Future medical treatment and rehabilitation.
  • Lost wages and diminished earning capacity.
  • Pain and suffering.
  • Property damage.
  • Permanent disability or disfigurement.

If the crash ultimately results in a fatality, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act (Florida Statutes §§768.16–768.26).

Preserving Evidence After a Serious Crash

In serious injury collisions, preserving evidence can be critical to determining liability.

Important evidence may include:

  • Crash scene photographs.
  • Vehicle damage documentation.
  • Surveillance or dash camera footage.
  • Electronic data from the vehicles involved.
  • Witness statements.
  • Medical records.
  • Florida Highway Patrol crash reports.
  • Crash reconstruction analysis.

A thorough investigation can help determine exactly how the collision occurred and whether negligence contributed to the crash.

Investigation Continues

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the serious crash on Highway 98 near Laureno Place.

Additional information, including the number of people involved, the extent of any injuries, and the cause of the crash, is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.

Serious crashes can have life-changing consequences for victims and their families. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident, and we hope those who were injured make a full recovery.
