Semi-Truck Crash on I-75 Causes Major Traffic Delays in Wesley Chapel

Michael T. Flanagan, Esq.

A crash involving two commercial trucks—including a Walmart semi-truck and another tractor-trailer hauling an oversized load—brought traffic to a standstill on Interstate 75 in Pasco County Saturday morning.

The collision blocked all northbound lanes near Wesley Chapel for hours, causing significant backups in both directions as emergency crews worked to clear the scene. Authorities have not yet released details regarding injuries or the cause of the crash.

What We Know About the Crash

According to reports, the crash occurred at approximately 10:00 a.m. on June 27, 2026, on northbound Interstate 75 near mile marker 280 in Wesley Chapel.

Initial information indicates:

  • The crash involved a Walmart semi-truck and a second tractor-trailer transporting an oversized load.
  • All northbound lanes of I-75 were temporarily blocked.
  • Significant traffic delays developed in both northbound and southbound lanes.
  • Emergency crews responded to the scene to remove the damaged vehicles.

Traffic camera footage showed the oversized-load truck jackknifed across the roadway while the Walmart semi came to rest diagonally across all three northbound travel lanes.

The oversized trailer appeared to be transporting a large white cylindrical structure, though officials have not identified the cargo.

SUV Found Crushed Beneath Semi-Truck

After crews removed the Walmart tractor-trailer from the roadway, a heavily crushed SUV was pulled from underneath the commercial vehicle.

Authorities have not released information regarding the occupants of the SUV or whether anyone suffered injuries.

As of Saturday afternoon, law enforcement had not confirmed:

  • The number of vehicles involved
  • Whether anyone was injured or killed
  • What caused the collision
  • Whether citations are expected

Traffic Disruptions Lasted for Hours

The crash created extensive delays for motorists traveling through Pasco County.

With all northbound lanes blocked, some drivers were seen using the highway shoulder and grassy median in an effort to bypass the congestion.

The Walmart truck was removed from the roadway approximately 40 minutes after the crash, though cleanup operations continued as crews worked to clear the remaining vehicles and oversized cargo.

Commercial Truck Crashes Can Be Complex

Crashes involving tractor-trailers and oversized loads often require lengthy investigations due to the size and weight of the vehicles involved.

Investigators may examine several factors, including:

  • Cargo securement
  • Driver actions
  • Speed
  • Following distance
  • Lane positioning
  • Equipment failures
  • Brake performance
  • Roadway conditions

Oversized-load transports are generally subject to additional safety requirements and permit conditions designed to reduce risks to the public.

Florida Laws That May Apply

Depending on the findings of the investigation, several Florida statutes could become relevant.

Florida Statute §316.0895 requires drivers to maintain a reasonable and prudent following distance behind other vehicles, particularly important for commercial vehicles that require longer stopping distances.

Investigators may also evaluate whether any violations occurred under Florida Statute §316.1925, which defines careless driving as operating a vehicle without careful and prudent regard for surrounding traffic and roadway conditions.

Commercial carriers may also be subject to applicable state regulations and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), including rules governing vehicle maintenance, cargo securement, and driver qualifications.

No violations have been announced at this time.

If the investigation determines that negligence contributed to the collision, injured victims may have the right to pursue compensation through a personal injury claim.

Depending on the circumstances, damages may include:

  • Medical expenses
  • Future medical treatment
  • Lost wages
  • Loss of earning capacity
  • Property damage
  • Pain and suffering

Commercial truck crashes may involve multiple potentially responsible parties, including drivers, trucking companies, maintenance providers, cargo loaders, or other third parties. Liability depends on the specific facts uncovered during the investigation.

Investigation Continues

Law enforcement continues to investigate the crash on Interstate 75.

Investigators are expected to determine:

  • What caused the collision
  • Whether the oversized load played a role
  • Whether any traffic or commercial vehicle regulations were violated
  • Whether injuries occurred
  • Whether enforcement action is appropriate

Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.

A Reminder for Florida Drivers

Commercial trucks require significantly more distance to stop and maneuver than passenger vehicles. Drivers should avoid lingering in truck blind spots, leave adequate following distance, and use extra caution when traveling near oversized-load transports.

Our thoughts are with anyone who may have been injured in Saturday’s crash as authorities continue their investigation.
