Semi-Truck and Van Overturn in I-75 Crash in Sarasota County

Three people were hospitalized Thursday morning after a crash involving a van and a semi-truck caused both vehicles to overturn along Interstate 75 in Sarasota County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred in the southbound lanes near Mile Marker 174 and caused significant traffic disruptions while emergency crews responded to the scene.

What We Know About the I-75 Crash

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 10:28 a.m. on August 6, 2026, on southbound Interstate 75 near Mile Marker 174.

Troopers reported that:

• A 62-year-old Tampa man was driving a 2007 Ford van southbound in the right lane.
• A 48-year-old Tampa woman was riding as a passenger in the van.
• A 46-year-old Miami man was driving a 2010 Freightliner tractor-trailer directly behind the van.
• FHP reported that the van was traveling below the minimum speed limit.
• As the van slowed, the truck driver was unable to stop before the front of the Freightliner struck the rear of the van.

The impact sent both vehicles off the interstate.

Van and Semi-Truck Both Overturned

According to FHP, the Ford van traveled off the right side of I-75 and overturned on the grassy shoulder.

The van eventually came to rest on its roof facing south.

The Freightliner also left the roadway following the collision. Troopers said the truck rotated clockwise before overturning on the shoulder and coming to rest on its left side.

The van’s driver and passenger were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The semi-truck driver was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

The collision resulted in the closure of southbound I-75 between Kings Highway and Toledo Blade Boulevard as emergency personnel responded to the overturned vehicles.
