Seffner Teen Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash Identified as Armwood High School Student
A tragic crash in Seffner, Florida has claimed the life of a 17-year-old high school student after a violent multi-vehicle collision involving a head-on crash and a hit-and-run driver, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The victim has been identified as Elijah Battiste, a student at Armwood High School. School officials say grief counselors will be available to support students and staff following the devastating loss.
What We Know About the Crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred on State Road 574 near Chastain Road on the night of April 12, 2026. Investigators say a Nissan Versa driven by a 40-year-old man was traveling eastbound when it crossed into the westbound lane and collided nearly head-on with a Volkswagen Passat driven by Battiste.
Following the initial impact, both vehicles came to rest in the roadway. Troopers say a third vehicle, a Ford F-150, then struck the Volkswagen. After the crash, the driver of the Ford fled the scene on foot and remains at large.
Both drivers involved in the initial collision were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Battiste later died from his injuries. Authorities say it is still unclear why the Nissan entered the opposing lane.
Multi-Vehicle and Hit-and-Run Crash Risks
Crashes involving multiple impacts are often among the most dangerous, as initial collisions can leave vehicles disabled in active roadways, increasing the risk of secondary impacts.
Key dangers in these types of crashes include:
- Head-on collisions causing severe or fatal injuries
- Secondary crashes involving additional vehicles
- Drivers fleeing the scene instead of rendering aid
- Delayed emergency response due to chaotic crash scenes
When a driver leaves the scene, it not only violates the law but can also worsen outcomes for victims who may need immediate assistance.
Legal Implications in Multi-Vehicle and Hit-and-Run Cases
Crashes involving multiple vehicles and a fleeing driver often require a detailed investigation to determine all sources of liability.
Potential liable parties may include:
- The driver who crossed into oncoming traffic
- The hit-and-run driver who fled after the secondary collision
- Vehicle owners, depending on ownership and permissive use
- Additional parties if other contributing factors are identified
Even when one driver appears primarily at fault, Florida law allows for liability to be shared among multiple parties based on their role in the crash.
Wrongful Death Claims Under Florida Law
Under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, Florida Statutes §§ 768.16–768.26, surviving family members may pursue compensation if negligence contributed to a fatal crash.
Damages may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical expenses incurred prior to death
- Loss of financial support and future earnings
- Loss of companionship and guidance
- Mental pain and suffering
Cases involving the loss of a minor are particularly significant, as families may seek compensation for both emotional and economic losses.
Investigation Ongoing
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash, including what caused the initial head-on collision and the identity of the driver who fled the scene.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact FHP or Crime Stoppers.
