Sarasota Motorcyclist Killed in Bradenton Crash with SUV, FHP Says
A 63-year-old Sarasota man died Saturday afternoon following a collision between his motorcycle and an SUV at a Bradenton intersection, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of 301 Boulevard East and 5th Street East in Manatee County.
Troopers said a Ford Explorer was traveling north on 5th Street East and approaching a stop sign at 301 Boulevard East.
At the same time, the Sarasota man was riding a Honda Silver Wing motorcycle westbound on 301 Boulevard East toward the same intersection.
According to FHP, as the SUV attempted to cross 301 Boulevard East, it entered the motorcyclist’s path. The motorcycle struck the right side of the SUV.
The impact caused the motorcycle to overturn, and the rider was thrown from the bike.
The motorcyclist was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries and was later pronounced dead.
The SUV’s driver, a 37-year-old Bradenton woman, was not injured in the crash. A 47-year-old female passenger in the SUV sustained minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
Motorcycle crashes at intersections frequently occur when:
- A driver fails to yield the right of way
- A vehicle attempts to cross or turn in front of an oncoming motorcycle
- Visibility issues cause a driver to misjudge speed or distance
Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable in these types of collisions due to the lack of structural protection compared to passenger vehicles.
Legal Options After a Fatal Motorcycle Crash
When a crash results in a fatality, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Florida law.
Compensation in these cases may include:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Medical bills related to emergency care
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and guidance
- Emotional pain and suffering
Determining liability often involves reviewing traffic signals, right-of-way rules, vehicle damage, witness statements, and crash reconstruction evidence.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision at 301 Boulevard East and 5th Street East.
