Pregnant Woman Among Four Injured in Rollover Crash After Suspect Flees Traffic Stop in Miami
A tragic rollover crash in Miami on Wednesday night left four people hospitalized, including a pregnant woman, after a reckless driver fleeing a traffic stop caused a violent collision at a busy intersection. The driver and his passenger fled the scene but were later detained by authorities, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO).
The crash was the result of a failed traffic stop initiated by MDSO’s Robbery Intervention Detail (RID) near NW 56th Street and 27th Avenue. Officers attempted to pull over a white Mercedes-Benz for having an illegal front windshield tint, but the driver, later identified as 20-year-old Jane Davis, refused to stop and sped off recklessly, authorities said.
A “be on the lookout” (BOLO) alert was issued for the vehicle. Minutes later, the same Mercedes was involved in a multi-vehicle crash at NW 22nd Avenue and NW 26th Street, just a few miles from the attempted stop.
Surveillance footage from a nearby apartment complex showed the moment Davis’s Mercedes slammed into two other vehicles, flipping one of them onto its side. The wreckage left passengers trapped inside, prompting a swift response from City of Miami Fire Rescue, Miami Technical Rescue Team, and local police.
Good Samaritans and deputies were seen on cellphone video trying to rock the overturned car upright before rescue crews used specialized cutting tools to extract the victims.
Still images released by Miami Fire Rescue revealed the extensive damage to both vehicles, highlighting the force of the collision.
Five people were removed from the wreckage and evaluated at the scene. Four victims, including the pregnant woman, were transported to Ryder Trauma Center in critical but stable condition. The fifth individual did not require hospitalization.
Despite early witness accounts suggesting a police pursuit, MDSO stated there was no active chase. Officials confirmed that the Mercedes involved in the crash was the same vehicle that fled the attempted stop earlier in the evening.
Both Davis and his unidentified passenger fled on foot after the collision. They were later detained by police, and Davis is now facing multiple felony charges, including:
- Leaving the scene of a crash causing serious bodily injury
- Fleeing and eluding police
- Resisting an officer without violence
- Reckless driving
Criminal and Civil Liability in Florida
Under Florida law, fleeing the scene of a crash resulting in serious injury (Florida Statutes § 316.027) is a felony offense, punishable by significant prison time and permanent revocation of driving privileges.
In addition to criminal charges, the victims in this crash may pursue civil claims for compensation, including:
- Medical expenses and future care
- Pain and suffering
- Loss of income
- Permanent disability
- Prenatal trauma or high-risk pregnancy complications (in the case of the pregnant victim)
When reckless or criminal behavior causes injury, the at-fault driver can be held liable for damages through a personal injury lawsuit. Fleeing the scene, particularly when it involves serious harm, significantly strengthens a victim’s legal case for recovery.
