Police Identify Woman Killed After Being Struck by Pickup Truck Outside Cocoa Village Playhouse
Cocoa police have identified the woman who was struck and killed Friday afternoon outside the Cocoa Village Playhouse as Lexis Julia Jordan, 25, following a tragic pedestrian crash that also caused damage to the historic building.
According to authorities, the incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. when a 2016 white Dodge Ram 1500, driven by a 64-year-old man, left the roadway near the Cocoa Village Playhouse. Police believe the driver may have suffered a medical episode, causing the truck to clip the sidewalk, strike two pedestrians, and then crash into the building.
Emergency responders arrived to find Jordan unresponsive on the ground. Bystanders immediately began performing CPR until she was transported to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The second pedestrian, a man who was with Jordan at the time, declined medical treatment. The driver of the pickup truck was also taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Witnesses reported that the truck mounted the sidewalk before hitting the pedestrians, highlighting the sudden and violent nature of the crash.
The Cocoa Village Playhouse was closed at the time of the incident. Playhouse Managing Director Benjamin Cox stated that he and the organization’s CEO were inside the building when the crash occurred and expressed gratitude that no one else inside was injured. He also extended condolences to Jordan’s family and all those affected by the tragedy.
Cocoa police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether a medical emergency contributed to the driver losing control of the vehicle. Investigators will examine medical records, vehicle data, witness statements, and scene evidence to determine exactly what led to the collision.
Pedestrian fatalities often require detailed reconstruction, particularly when vehicles leave the roadway and enter areas intended for foot traffic. These investigations are critical to determining accountability and preventing future incidents.
Pedestrian Safety and Legal Considerations
Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable roadway users, especially in mixed-use areas like downtown districts, theaters, and shopping corridors. When a vehicle mounts a sidewalk, the consequences are often catastrophic.
In fatal pedestrian crashes, families may have legal rights under Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, depending on the circumstances. Potential claims may involve:
- Medical and emergency expenses
- Funeral and burial costs
- Loss of companionship, support, and services
- Mental pain and suffering of surviving family members
In some cases, liability may extend beyond the driver, depending on contributing factors such as vehicle defects, roadway design, or failure to address known hazards.
